I just wanted to tell you all that I thought forever that I had
acanthosis nigricans, a type of skin discoloration due to IR. However, I went to a dermatologist for another reason and he pointed it out and when I told him it was AN (as several other doctors had said it was, including my endo), he told me I was wrong. I was miffed at first - but then he did a skin scraping (freaked me out, didn't hurt though) and he was right!
My skin problem, which looks like AN and affects a lot of people, is called
Tinea Versicolor and it's a fungal (ew) infection of the skin. Having diabetes or IR makes you more likely to get it, but it doesn't directly cause it. He gave me some pills (two 400 mg doses, taken a week apart) and some special shampoo/body wash to use once a week and said it should clear up and stay gone.
I just thought those of you with AN who haven't seen a dermatologist might try it because tinea versicolor is fairly common. Even my endo and my gyno thought it was AN and they were wrong. I hate my splotches so I'm very excited that they might go away!
