Hi! I wanted to know if anyone has noticed a change in their skin. For example, my neck area has definitely gotten a lot darker and I read somewhere that PCOS can cause it as well as the skin tags. I don't have the skin tags though, thank goodness. If anyone has experienced this, what have you done to lighten your skin? It looks really bad!
Thanks a lot ladies,
Kate

I know you can buy skin-lightening creams, but unless you work towards the root of the problm, that's not going to be as beneficial.
The dark-patches are caused by excess insulin leaking into the skin as I believe (feel free to correct me), so you need to work with your body's insulin issues.
My remedy? I tan, easily, so for me the dark-patches which once seemed so bad, now just kind of blend in with my tan. I'm going to be trying tot ackle the insulin thing soon though!

I have this as well and have had it for many years. There really isn't anything that you can do to make it lighten up that I have found hopefully someone else will post to this and will have found something because I would love to know LOL. I have the skin tags as well, they aren't real bad. I have a few here and there so hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones and not get those, they are more annoying than anything.

Yeah, I kind of figured it had to do with the insulin problem. The lightening cream would be great even though it is temporary, at least I won't be sooo self conscious about it. Thanks for your input !

Hi Jenn...isn't it annoying? Makes me feel like I am displaying my health issues for everyone to see. Anyway...when I find out what cream will help with it, I will definitely let you know .

What you describe is called acanthosis nigricans or AN for short. I've had it since puberty. I never knew what it was and tried scrubbing it off until my skin was raw or even using bleach thinking that would lighten it.
The way AN was explained to me is my body has become desensitized to insulin so my pancreas just keeps making more until my body finally responds and utilizes it. The excess insulin spills over into the skin causing the thickened ridges and discoloration.
Mine are a light tan color under my arms, on the crease in back of my neck and in the groin area. It's embarassing to me and I hate wearing my hair up or wearing sleeveless outfits. Still, I have it very mildly compared to some. I saw a girl once who had it so bad around her neck that it looked like someone had tried to strangle her.
It did almost fade significantly (except in the groin area) after 3 months of low carbing and losing 30 pounds. It came right back when I started eating carbs again.
Some have said that metformin has helped regulate their insulin and as a result lightened the spots to some degree. I'm not on metformin though.
It seems to me from my experiences and reading those of others that losing weight and watching carb intake and keeping insulin levels balanced are the biggest factors in making the spots lighten or go away. After all, the less insulin spilling into your skills means less noticeable spots.
I've read that nowadays, many doctors are looking for signs of AN in children as an earlier indicator of insulin problems. I wish my doctors had told me what my AN was indicative of. I've could have made significant changes early on to prevent the problems I have now.
These pictures show severe cases, far worse than we probably have, but it at least gives an idea to those that have never seen it or need to compare their "spots".

Hello again...Hezzer actually gave me a link to more posts about this problem. I've found out that some ladies are using creams and lotions to lighten the skin. Click on the link to find out what some ladies are using. Good luck!

My worst patches were on my ankles and elbows. Then my armpits and inner thighs. But over time they've gone away. I restarted Met again and the last stubborn bit on my elbow is starting to go! I'm excited about that!
So IME, the best solution was getting the insulin under control.
