Default Dark Skin?

For years I have had darker than normal underarms. And recently in between my upper thighs. I just attributed it to chaffing due to being overweight.

So I've been thinking about some laser hair and skin treatments and today I started researching things online. Little did I know...there is actually a condition that causes this which is associated with insulin resistance and being overweight. It's called Acanthosis Nigricans. It causes skin in areas like your neck, underarms and groin to be darker than the rest of your body. It's also attributed to eating the wrong foods, including sugar and starches/carbs (the latter being my favorite... sigh)

Does anyone else have this? I always kinda thought it was just something I'd have to put up with. Even when I was thin enough to wear sleeveless shirts I never like doing so b/c of this skin discoloration. I guess it's even more motivation to take the Met, eat healthy and lose some weight.

If I don't take my met regularly and don't eat right, I get it. I had it for a long time until I was dx'd with PCOS and went on met.

In fact, I had one DUNCE doctor who wanted to take me OFF the met because I didn't have it. DUMMY didn't stop to think that maybe the met cleared it up.

Yep, AN and PCOS often go hand in hand. Metformin and a lower carb diet are good, but adding cinnamon to my diet realy made the marks under my arms start to lighten.

Check here for more info:

Cinnamon and AN: anyone trying cinnamon for IR?

Cinnamon - part 2

Cinnamon?

Learn something new everyday! I really had no idea one had anything to do with another. I've even thought about seeing a dermatologist for it; I never thought ask my ob/gyn or RE about it. I bought some lemons over the weekend and have one more reason to be religious about the met. Hopefully it will clear up soon. Thanks for all the links and advice!!!

Ugh, mine is awful. AWFUL. I don't wear my hair up because my neck is so dark. My elbows, knees, and groin are also bad.

It took me years to realize that it had to do with PCOS. One doctor had me putting bleach on it (!!) and using coal as deoderant. I decided to stop worrying about it.

My doc wants to put me on met and from what you guys have said, it helps. Even if it lightens a bit I will be really excited.

It's really embarrasing. I never wore sleeveless shirts since high school because of it. I thought people would think I forgot to shave! Little did I know it was really indication of a bigger problem.

I found that adding Inositol as a supplement works wonders as well.

Can you get it anywhere on your chest wher your bra sticks and rumbs into you... my bra is an underwire one and sticks into me at sides and in middle (yes I know I shouldnt' wear it but I like the shape).. and i am getting these little tan velvety markes where it sticks in...

I have never had AN before but I gather this is it? I just is where the bra rubs though and not on neck , thighs or underarms well sort of around underarms where bra sticks in at side?
