You may have acanthosis nigricans. This is usually a sign of insulin resistance and this why they went away when you were on GLUCOPHAGE/Metformin.

Eating too much of the wrong foods, especially starches and sugars, can cause insulin resistance. This will result in elevated insulin levels. Most patients with acanthosis nigricans have a higher insulin level than those of the same weight without acanthosis nigricans. Elevated levels of insulin in most cases probably cause acanthosis nigricans. The elevated insulin levels in the body activates insulin receptors in the skin, forcing it to grow abnormally. Reducing the circulating insulin by dieting or medication can lead to improvement of the skin problem.

Diet to improve appearance:
If you cannot go back to GLUCOPHAGE/Metformin then you should limit your sugar/simple carb intake - basically eat like a diabetic. Increase the vegitables reduce the pasta, rice, and other starchy products in your diet. I changed the way I ate and increased the amount of exercise I did - my areas are almost gone (not totally because I do cheat).
This does not mean that you cannot drink juice or eat cake when you make it for your son, etc. You just have to be wise about it.
If you are baking a cake - you can use a sugar substitute (I use stevia or splenda although my family feels that they are bad and I should just NEVER eat a piece of cake or any treat again), use wheat flour instead of white, etc.
Instead of drinking a glass of juice try at first using half cup of juice with a half cup of water and over time reduce or eliminate the amount of juice in the cup. I find out that many people do not understand what 1 serving of juice is AND that 1 8 oz cup of juice is not the amount from 1 fruit. If you were to juice 1 orange you would get just a couple of oz of juice. So instead of 1 cup being equal to 1 serving of orange you are getting multiple serving of oranges - without the benefit of the fiber in the actual fruit. So fruit is good juice is bad - we avoid it.
Medically improving appearance (does not address the underlying cause):
Treatment to just improve the appearance includes Retin-A, 20% urea, alpha hydroxyacids, and lactic or salicylic acid prescriptions.
