I have dark underarms and I am veeeeery self conscious about them, i NEVER EVER wear tanktops or anything like that because they're so dark and its so obvious because I am fair skinned. (I haven't been diagnosed w/PCOS yet, but I told my mom this is a symptom and she just told me i'm not scrubbing enough *rolls eyes**)
Does anyone have any ways to get rid of it? because I would love to get rid of it, thanks
what my endo tells me it's a symptom of pcos and he said there's not much i can do now to get rid of it. but with time it should lighten up a lot through medications. i'm on 1500 mg of metformin now for about 3.5 months. hope that helps and yes you should def go see a doctor about this. don't let your mom just shrug it off

I also have dark patches around my neck, under arms, inner thighs, elbows and knees and also was starting to get them on my hands, i've been taking Met for 4 months now and just recently started to notice improvement, my endo said that it has to do with the insulin in one's body so, by improving your diet and taking the meds you should see some improvements. I understand, every since I was a little girl my parents would be like " Girl you need to scrub it off " Yeah right, that never helped... Good luck... :-)
I hate when people say " well you're just not scrubbing enough". I got so upset about it once that I bought a pumice stone just for that to show them that I can scrub all I want and its not because I don't know how to wash MYSELF!! grr.
Anyway, it didn't help (obviously) I still have a hard time with the patches. KatCarney-Thanks for the fish oil info. I'll look up the thread!

I have the same condition. I have read losing weight helps obviously for those of us who are presently overweight. I have also heard by just losing 10 pounds the dark patches cleared up but obviously everyone's different. When I take a bath the water softens the patches and I scrub it off. The results are temporary but it lets me enjoy wearing a dress every now and then. My doc said its a sign of pre diabetes also blah blah blah.
My doctor told my there was nothing I could do about it, but to lose weight, which is easy when your a 5'6 super skinny man, but thats not the point. If i know i am going to be wearing a tank top or wearing my hair up, I use this lavender face mask cream that I bought at the dollar store. i leave it on for like 15 mins, then scrub it off. It lightens it for a while, other wise I wear sleeved shirts and necklaces.
I've come to terms that I may have diabetes, i'm not too worried about it but it would suck if i do =( my mom has it and my brother has it, and i'm overweight so i wouldn't be surprised if i do.
anyway...I guess i'll just have to live w/this dark skin. It upsets me that it bothers me so much when there are much bigger things to worry about, i have to get over it.

The dark patches are called Acanthosis Nigricans. They are a sign to being pre-diabetic or diabetic.
