Default Dark spots from ingrown hairs

I am posing this question specifically to African American women (because we have issues particular to AA skin), but ANYONE who has advice, please post it.

What do you all do to get rid of dark spots on the neck/chin caused by ingrown hairs from plucking, waxing or shaving? I've tried coca butter, shea butter and Black Opal products, but to no avail. I HATE the hair on my neck/chin, but I could deal with that much better if I didn't also have the dark spots accompanying them. Now that winter is over, I can no longer hide under turtlenecks. Help!

Any suggestions???

Hi

Sorry, I don't know. I've got them on my breast, so mine are covered. Hope someone else can help.

Hi Skeeopatra,
My chin was my worst enemy for a while, then realized that I had to spend some money to correct it. I did Micordermabrasion, 6 session and they were basically gone. They usually say 12 sessions, but believe me you'll love it! For maintenance I go once a month. As for daily skin care, I use Murad products, along with a scrub that I do every other day because my skin is very very oily. If you want to see a dramatic change do the Micordermabrasion. It's about 100.00 a session and you go every 2 weeks. Good luck!

Thanks Keshia,

I was going to look into Micordermabrasion, but I always thought it wasn't safe for AA skin. I'm going to ask my doctor about it. Also, what do you use to get rid of the hair and how do you prevent getting more dark spots?

Hello again,
Well for me the hair on my chin and upper lip is fairly fine, but I do have several coarse hairs on my chin which I just pluck with tweezers. The rest is just a facial hair remover - Nair or Sally Hansen. To maintain a pretty even complexion I use facial scrubs and a moiturizer with glycolic acid in it. Prior to using that when I had it real bad, my dermatoligist gave me Azelex (azelaic acid cream and Differin) Because the over the counter products like Black Opel had an adverse effect on my skin. I don't get many scars anymore because I've changed my eating habits. Less Carbs = Clearer skin & slower hair growth. It's the oil I'm fighting with now..I guess I can look at it as blessing knowing I will grow old gracefully . Do you shave? Cause I know alot of the cysters on the boards can help you out with that if you do. I hope this helps you out a little..Take Care

My dermatologist gave me an Rx some time a go that worked like a charm for returning the dark spots to normal...for the LIFE of me I can't remember the name (and I'm not at home at the moment, so I can't go rummaging through my medicine cabinet.)

If I don't post the name by tomorrow, it's because I've forgotten to check...so drop me a PM to remind me

I just remembered...

Melanex is the product. It's Rx only, and is a liquid. Within a month the spots were gone for me.

It's not that expensive, either. @ $15.00

Here's what the bottle looks like: http://www.iws.bz/neutrogena/Melanex.htm

BTW, you don't want this: http://www.lfbi.com.au/melanex.htm

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much Kat! I actually heard of Melanex about a year ago, but forgot to ask my doctor about it. I have an appointment on Monday and getting Melanex will be my first order of business. Thanks for everyone's responses.

I wanted to thank you again, Kat, for the Melanex tip. I've been using it now for about 2 1/2 weeks and while I haven't seen a drastic change yet, I'm hoping to very soon. Also, i got it for $5.00 with my insurance, so it's a win win situation. I do have a few questions, however. Did you use it twice a day? Did you only apply it to the dark spots? I ask that because I try to get it only on the spots, but since it's liquid, it tends to drip all over.

I am thinking about getting the product...but I am wondering if it can be used for dark spots on any areas of the body...(i.e. neck, hands, feet, chest, etc...)

If anyone has tried this product on other areas besides the face..lemme know?

ZphisticatedLady,

I have a scar on my arm from a burn I got about 2 years ago. It was slowly fading by itself, but I started using the Melanex on it and it has faded significantly since then. So, I would venture to say that it should work on pretty much all body parts. Let me know if it works for you.

You're welcome!

Yes, I used it twice a day, morning and night. My derm doc also gave me an Rx for Retin-A micro which made it work faster.

He told me that I didn't need to worry about getting it 'just' on the spots...according to him, the liquid would not bleach my 'regular' skin color.

For some reason, it didn't do much for my AN, but it worked well for 'hair' spots and scars...

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone has found an over the counter equivalent to Melanex. I don't have insurance right now so I'm not able to go to the doctor and get a prescription. I've been looking all over for something to use on the ingrown hairs and spots on my chin, and I'm tired of wasting money on products that don't work. Just wondering if anyone has had any type of success with products that can be bought without a prescription. Thanks!
