Hi! I was diagnosed last year and now my 13 year old daughter has just been diagnosed as well! I was wondering if anyone could shed some light the glucose insulin ratio, and if anyone has any ideas or suggestions for helping her deal with this. She is starting to take a low dose birth control pill. Please Help!
Julie
Honestly, I was on Birth control when I was that age to control my period. How much does she know about the PCOS? Does she have problems with her glucose rate. She isnt into the years of even thinking about having children and you had a child so I wouldnt let her worry about that too much.
Well I will give you both alot of credit for finding out early for her sake. At least now she will know when things start going hay wire. Only suggestions I can make is watch her moods on BCP's and Diet/Exercise. I'm not sure if she has hair issues but at that age one hair on the chin can be aweful. Believe me on that one - My bf found my first few hairs and mentioned it in front of everyone ... Very embarressing
Good Luck to both of you and Welcome to SC's

Right now teh best thing you can probably do for her is to let her know that youre there for her and you understand all the things she's feeling right now seeing as you've gone through it yourself. Also, just teache her what you can - knowledge is power. If you dont know already find out what buggs her most about what shes dealing with in respect to the PCOS and see if you can find somethng that can help with each individual thing. Think of how you feel and what you think about yourself and PCOS and chances are she's thinking/feeling the same things, so even if you dont ask her what bothers her about it you know what bothers you so you can do little things to help her along. Just be there as a source of support and knowledge it'll help more than anything else knowing that you understand.

When I was 13 and on BCP(for irregular cycles) till I was 20, I was not diagnosed but I would have done differently. Later on after marriage I wanted to try to conceive and I was finally diagnosed on my 8th cycle trying. The first thing I did was go on the insulin resistance diet - and I feel so much better. I had my first regular cycle with great temperatures and my cholesterol went from 290 to 210 in 30 days. I use natural progesterone cream as well as B complex vitamins and plan on using the cream for entire cycles once I'm done having children. Most of my diet is organic and my skin products have grapefruit extract instead of benzoil peroxide - works wonders. This is the first time I feel normal since I started having pcos symptoms at 12. Thought I'd offer your daughter another option to pick from. I don't plan on using medication since what I'm doing alone regulated by numbers and I don't need the meds - my lab results were horrific prior to the IR diet and both my ovaries were covered with cysts. B- complex vitamins (brand name Equaline) have helped take away my fatigue. They convert food into energy to balance out how pcos converts food into fat. Prior to any of this I was 160 pounds as a teen and now I am 110 pounds so healthy eating plays a huge part.

There are actually a few really great resources for teens with PCOS. These are places you can log on with her, as well. PCOSA http://www.pcosupport.org has a message board and area specifically for teens with PCOS called PCO Teen. I am not sure how active it still is but, when I was with PCOSA, it used to have a lot of activity. There is a teen message board and e-mail ist and also a Big Cyster list in which teens can communicate with older women about PCOS.
This is particaulrly helpful as many teens deal with anxiety over what the future will hold for them with PCOS. Ther eis also a great article on OBGYN.net called Helping your Teen: PCOS from a Parent's Perspective by Molly Shulamn. Molly has always been very active in the PCOS COmmunity and her daughter Racehl ran PCO Teen for quite some time. Here is the link http://www.obgyn.net/pcos/articles/shulman.htm
Hope these resources help!
All the Best,
Ashley
