Angry daughter and pcos

Hi Everyone!
I am so frustrated and angry right now. I dont even know if I am posting this in the right place. My daughter is 14 years old and a couple years ago while at a routine visit with her pediatrician, I told the doctor about my pcos and that I was concerned for my daughter since she hadnt gotten a period and was gaining weight. He was concerned too since she showed some other symptom also. He ran bloodwork on her and was concerned about some counts (i think her testosterone and I'm not even sure what else was off the wall) so he had he see an endo that came to our area once every 3 months (she practices out of a big city 25 miles away). He also put her on Metaphormin. Before she was able to see the endo she got a "spot" or 2 and was losing weight and doing great. A couple months later when we finally got in to see the endo she came to the conclusion that since she never has gotten a true period you cannot tell if she has pcos and immediatley took her off the metaphormin and came right out and said "you need to see a nutritionist". My daughter was p---d off. Needless to say we were both steaming(especailly when the nutrionist is another 25 miles away also). We just kind of washed our hands of it, and can you believe the pediatrician never even asked us ever again what was going on with the endo?? Since then she hasnt been back to the endo or that pediatrician. I have her in with an adults General Practioner whom I work for. I talked with him and he wasnt sure of an endo that would see her, so today I called my insurance company, Anthem Blue Cross, and was given a listing of only 4 endos in Connecticut that would see her... 3 of them were with that idiotic doctor that she had seen a couple years ago. So the I decided to call the "other" one and sure enough they no longer do the endo part of the business. Now I'm truly stuck. This kid is gaining weight, has not had a period yet (and she is almost 15), she is so hormonal its killing me. She did so good on the Met and now is not doing good at all. She has the thick black elbows, and the black mark on the back of her neck, all of which the pediatrician thought were signs of pcos. I'm so frustrated with the fact that there arent more endos out there for kids. I am a chicken to drive in heavy traffic and to drive to Hartford is a big deal for me, and I cant have my husband take time off of work to bring us there. I know that there really is no answer to this dilemma, but I had to Rant about it. I am so mad. I feel so bad when I look at my daughter and know that I really dont know what to do for her. I was thinking that maybe if I hold out till the end of June when she will be 15 and call my gyno and see if I can take her in (not for an exam) but maybe to discuss this, if I wait it is giving her body a little more time to get a period. What do you think? I am so sorry that this is so long, but I had to get it off my chest. Thanks everyone....
Brenda

I am so sorry to hear that you and especially your daughter are having to go thru this! It's awful. I can't believe how cruel some endos/GPs can be! Your daughter doesn't deserve to be treated like that and neither do you!

If you can, I would talk to you GYN about bringing your daughter in. Your daughter deserves to be treated respect and kindness, not cruel and like another other child.

Maybe your GYN will be able to help. While PCOS usuually doesn't show up until after a female gets her first period, I know of a couple cases that the reason they didn't get it was because PCOS decided to reak havoc early.

I know I didn't say anything new that everyone else may have told you, but it helps to know that you and your daughter have support here.

Good Luck and I hope everything works out!

I'm so sorry you're going through this, and I can definitely feel for your daughter. Don't give up fighting for her though! I can tell you're a very devoted mom, and I commend you on that! I was like your daughter when I was younger. I didn't have my first period until I was 17, because every doctor I went to just told me to lose weight and it'll come with time. They finally put me on provera every month to induce my period. I have shown symptoms of PCOS since very early puberty...about 11 or 12. When I turned 21, I had a very serious spike in blood pressure, was hospitalized, and on blood pressure meds for 3 years. I was also diagnosed with clinical depression and on anti-depressants for 3 years. My weight went up and up, and unless I was on birth control, I never EVER had a period. Then when I was 23, I started losing my hair and my facial hair started getting darker and darker. No one ever put two and two together, and I was treated for all of these symptoms separately, no one ever thought that they could have been a sign of ONE problem...PCOS! It wasn't until I was 26 that my aunt (who also had a lot of the same problems) was dx with PCOS and the light bulb came on! What I'm saying, is don't let your daughter suffer like I did. Keep on going, fight the doctors for the treatment she deserves! I would call your gyn and see if they would treat her, since you're already a patient there they might make an exception if they have age restrictions or don't usually take patients her age. Good luck to you, and hugs to your daughter! She sure is lucky to have a mom as determined as you!

I had exaclty the same thing every doc just said - just wait your only young your AF's are still settling down theres nothing wrong blah blah blah blah blah..
oh yeah and this line ' have you been under alot of stress... maybe thats why your not getting them' I mean sure these are the reasons for some people but docs need to learn not to rule out pcos just because someone is young. Agh... good luck finding a good doctor. Are there any buses to your next nearest town (the one you dont want to drive too?)
See ya

She did so good on the Met
Your reg gyn or family doctor can monitor her as well.
Learn here what needs to be check and when...Then tell the dr what you want done.

Yes there are lots of answers and you have found the right place to find them. It will take alot of reading and self diagnosing, but you can do it!

You need to be the one to talk to the doctor and inform them wh things went.
I had major surgery. The surgen took me off Gluc/Met.
When I started to ask why, he would only shake his head and shrug. Hows that for an answer? After the 5th or 6th time I asked when I was going back on it, he said for me to contact my reg doctor. So when I did get back to her, she explained that the hospital was confused as to why I was on it if I wasn't diabetic.
See they would have to pke and check my sugars every hour while in the hospital. My doctor told them to take me off it. She told me it was to avoid getting blood drawn every hour or two.

So it was easier for one doctor to just take me off of it than to get a whole hospital staff to understand why I was on it.

My biggest complaint at the time was with my surgen who I thought was being a butthead.

So don't be afraid to tell a doctor what you want to try and why.
Then they can either agree or disagree. If they disagree, ask for an explanation.

Hang in there...There is hope!

It's very frustrating to have to explain that Metformin is not just a diabetic medication, I work in a hospital and when i told people about being Insulin resistant the first response is "you're diabetic?" uhh no.

First off, I would ask the doctor for copies of the blood work, something I've learned working at the hospital is if i have my bloodwork done at the hospital I can get copies even before my doctor gets them. You will need this information as you search for a doctor to understand this.

No one said you need to see an endocrinologist, at 15 years old she can see a GYN you will find one that is familiar with PCOS and get him to treat her. I saw GYN's at 14 even though at the time they didn't know I had PCOS i had alot of problems with menstration mostly a lack there of. Even if all they do is put her on BCP's it will help with the hormones. Hopefully you will be able to find one that can put her on Metformin also.

Good Luck in your search.

I have decided that I will give her until June when she will be 15 (to see if she gets a period), and if not I am going to call the gyno to see if they can fit her in. I told my hubby that I was thinking maybe they would put her on a bcp and he blew a gasket!! Typical man to "jump the gun". I think some men just dont see it from our point of view. I am worried for Briannas health and I want to do whatever is necessary to get her on the right path. To get her the help she may need.
As far as these people that presume we are diabetics because we take glucophage or met, they should study their facts before they open their mouths. I ran into this myself with my aunt and her "pharmacist" boyfriend...shows how swift he is. They insisted that I was diabetic because I take glucophage. I tried with all my might to explain my "situation". But I kind of gave up on them and let them think what they wanted. Dont you just wish we could just whip out a pamphelt with all the pcos facts in it just to prove our point to these people???? Geesh!!
Thanks for all the input from everyone..I appreciate it.

I found a Post that someone did with a
"pamplet" about PCOS, and sent it out to my immediate family explaining PCOS, in fact now my mom is going to get tested for IR as a result.
