dealing with suddenly wavy hair hi!
my hair used to be stick straight. i liked it that way. when i was around 24, it started to kink up. i was so frustrated. i'd had a perm before that, so i thought it wasn't growing out or something?? it was so irritating!
it took a few years to realize that my hair was now naturally curly. not pretty-curly, though, but albert einstein-curly. ARGH. i think it was due to a hormonal change (related to PCOS, obviously), but who knows? (i wasn't pregnant.)
now, i'm almost 28 and i've finally realized what i need to do to make it look good. here's what i do, in case it can help anyone else:
--only wash with shampoo 3 or 4 times/week. in between, i either don't wash it at all OR just 'wash' it with conditioner (no shampoo). this keeps it from drying out. i use a heavy-duty moisturizing shampoo and conditioner (no 2-in-ones, either). i like the john frieda line for blondes. 2x per month, i use the john frieda hair glazing product. it provides even more shine and conditioning.
--never blow dry (hair gets way too frizzy). as soon as i step out of the shower, i pull it all back into a ponytail. this is a key step for my hair: i don't know why, but it gets frizzy if i don't do this. i leave it until the front pieces are dry, then i take the ponytail holder out and fluff out my hair. i spray an organic leave-in conditioner on it and fluff some more. then i leave it to air dry. when it's dry, i add a product i found that gives sea-textured hair: it contains oils and salty water. i spritz it on my hand and rub it through the ends for a shiny, textured look. it looks really neat and helps define the curls.
--for special occasions, i spray my whole head with a glossy, low-hold hairspray for added sheen
now my hair looks great (looks like charlize theron's hair) and dh loves it!
oh, also, those expensive salon hair straighteners are sooooo good. the ones with all-ceramic plates are the best. they smooth the cuticle of the hair really well! if i use that, though, i always pre-treat my hair with a spray that protects it from the heat. i get that from the salon, but any department store has it, too. so even though i use the straightener often, i don't have split ends.
