Default Dealing With Work

Hi

I'm new here and haven't posted before but was just wondering how you cope with a few things...I was diagnosed a few days ago with PCOS and have been having issues with depression for the past 9 years on and off. Recently its got really bad and it's really effecting my work...I work in IT in quite a stressful job and I find I just sit there and stare at the screen and cant concentrate on my work at all and going into the office fills me with dread. I got signed off work for 3 weeks a few weeks ago and then went back as I didn't want to look a failure at work. However its 4 weeks down the line and im back to how I was and I just don't think I can face this work at all at the moment.

On the depression side of things I went to my dr about it and have been referred to the CBT team and am waiting to see their therapist but there is a 12 week waiting list

So I was just wondering if any of you have faced this problem and how you have dealt with it as I just feel unable to cope and really in the environment can't lose my job due to finances and my boyfriend has just been made redundant too so need all the income we can get :S

What is the CBT team? That is not a term I am familiar with. Is there another therapist you can see that doesn't have such a long waiting list? Are you taking any antidepressents? When I was first diagnosed with anxiety, antidepressents are what kept me sane (or at least semi-sane). I was in college when I had the worst of my anxiety problems. Fortunately, I never had to concentrate for more than an hour or two at a time. I am not sure what advice I can give you about your job. Is it possible that you can transfer to a different position in the company that is less stressful? Is your boss/supervisor aware and supportive of you situation?

I hope this was at least somewhat helpful to you. Good luck and I am here if you just need to talk.

Hi sarah

Thanks for your reply. The CBT team is the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy team...basically I've had counselling twice before so my dr thought it might be a good idea to try this to see if I get any more benefit from it.
The waiting lists over here seem to be so long so unless I go private and pay out lots of money then I will have to wait A couple of years ago there was a 9 month waiting list to see a therapist so I suppose at least this time round its not as long a wait!

I'm not talking antidepressants at the moment...the dr spoke to me about them but I really don't want to take them so we are leaving it as a last option...

I think with the job thing its hard as the recession has hit jobs real hard over here and so where I work there isn't really anything less stressful I can transfer too. My manager is aware of my situation but tends to just speak to me as though i'm a pain in the ass and that he can't be bothered with me...which isn't really helping either

Did you find the anti-depressants helpful or did they just leave you feeling a bit numb?

Vixy,
I guess when you put it into perspective 12 weeks is not that long to wait. I couldn’t imagine having to wait 9 months to see a therapist. I would probably talk myself out of it and not go.

It is really too bad that your supervisor isn’t more supportive. It has been my experience that only people who have dealt with anxiety or depression really understand how it feels. During the worst of my anxiety, I wouldn’t sleep because I knew that if I went to sleep I would never wake up. I know this is irrational, but during an anxiety attack it doesn’t really matter. A lot of times, I just need somebody to talk to so I can take my mind off of things. Is there somebody at work that you take breaks with that you could talk to? You don’t even have to tell them your situation, just talk about anything to help get your mind off of it.

Antidepressants did help me and I never felt numb while taking them. I was in college when I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. I wasn’t able to deal with the stress of college and figure out how to deal with my anxiety in a more natural way. I took Paxil for about 7 years and then I decided I wanted to try and deal with my anxiety in a more natural way. Most of the time it works. I wouldn’t completely rule out antidepressants, especially if you have to wait so long before you can see a therapist. In the end, you need to do what you think is best for you. Do some research online, or at your library, for more natural ways to deal with your depression.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

Thanks for your help, I do have someone at work who I can go grab coffee with and tend to do that and it helps...I just feel that i'm getting nowhere with my work. But oh well I will get through this. I will see how it goes then and maybe go back to my gp for antidepressants. Thanks for your support

I was just thinking, I should get on here and see how you are doing. I am glad you have somebody at work to talk with. Please let me know if you ever have any questions, need to talk, or anything. You can send me a PM anytime. I can also give you my e-mail address if you want. Take care!
