I lost 5 lbs my first week on the IR Diet. I am wanting to start met primarly to help w/ weightloss and thinning hair. I know losing weight alone will help w/ all PCOS symptoms. I decided to wait until next week to see if I lose a good amount of weight again before I start met. Do you think this is a good decision?? I am not TTC and I am remaining on BCPs until we do decide to start trying.

Are you insulin resistant? If you are, waiting to start Met probably is not a god decision. High levels of insulin in your blood can damage your heart and other organs and this is what Met does for your body. If you are not IR, then maybe that isn't such a bad choice. I myself am IR and have had wonderful success with Met so I always recommend it.....everyone is different but like I said, if you are IR I would definetly take it.

Jenpalmer,
You are only taking 1000mg a day and dropping weight that fast?? What are you doing for your eating and exercising?? To answer your question if I am IR, I have had no official testing done but my Dr. says I am.

smash,
I was swimming at the height of losing that weight. Right now and for the past couple of months I haven't been doing anything except the occasional walk. I have changed my eating habits 100%....cut out lots of red meat, lots of carbs and sugar...I drink nothing but water. I don't limit myself completely otherwise I will just go crazy!!! I eat what I want, in moderation. My basic rules are no fast food, no sugary drinks, lotsa chicken and veggies. That's it really. I have been at a standstill with the weight loss. My doc says I should start on 1500 mgs to see if I start losing more. I'm going to join Curves next week though and see if that starts me back up before I take more met.

If you can manage your symptoms without the meds, go for it..seriously.
Diet is a HUGE aspect of this syndrome, and if you can manage things with lifestyle alone, it would be awesome. I tried diet/exercise alone for about 9 months and it wasn't enough for my stubborn hormones, but many women have great success when they get really committed. Give yourself a 6 month trial and then have your Dr run a new set of labs to see where you are at and if you're successful.
Good luck!
