Default Dental work during early pregnancy-- help!

I am so nervous. I am barely 5 weeks pg and I have what I think to be a cavity or something else going on in my back molar. Just started a few days agp. I am so mad at myself for not going to the dentist in so long....its been a few years. ( I know, terrible!) I just have taken for granted that I have good teeth. I have an appt tomorrow but of course you read all kinds of stuff online- from horror stories about birth defects, to the other extreme of yes, have your work done.
Does anyone have any experience with this? I have only had a few cavities and I dont remember how painful it was- what happens- do you get them drilled without pain meds?? CAn you do xrays if you are double draped or not? I hate not having definitive info. All I know is my gum area hurts, and it hurts to chew on that side so I want to get it taken care of...because of course I am worried about getting an infection.
Is there anything that can be done temporarily in place of a filling?

Rest assured dental work is safe in pregnancy. Yes it's "safer" later in pregnancy but it's still okay during the first tri. I had a failed root canal at 9 wks this time, I had to have many x-ray's done, plus local anesthetic to redrill it out and then a temp filling was put in. I'm about to go back and have the permanent filling put in.

My ob approves xrays as necessary (the new ones, digital, use 40% less radiation than the old x-rays do), and local anesthetic is fine, as is antibiotics and tylenol 3 for pain if necessary and prescribed.

It's better and safer to have it done, than to leave it and it end up getting infected. My tooth was already infected when it started bothering me. Good luck! Call your ob if you are very concerned but chances are it's okay!

I also had dental work and x-rays done when I was about 5 weeks pg with my DS. I didn't even know that I was pg and of course when I found out I freaked. But not to worry, he is perfectly fine and has had nothing wrong. It is definitely important to get your teeth taken care of especially when you are pg because an infection in your mouth can be a very serious thing!!! So definitely give your OB a call if you are still concerned, but I am sure that your dentist will also be extra careful with you!! Good luck!
