Default Just got Depo shot and scared...

Well, my doc gave me a depo shot two days ago. I did some checking online and found a lot of articles that say the depo caused women to gain weight and lose hair. I'm totally freaked out now because I'm already overweight and have severe thinning hair. Are any of you on depo? Any problems? Please help!

I had taken depo for a few years and while I did have weight gain during that time, I can't pin all of it on depo (change in exercise/eating habits and age). I did not have any problems with hair loss, but it is not something I struggle with. If you keep watching what you eat and exercise, you will still see the great weight loss you have already acheived. If you don't like what depo is doing in 3 months, talk with your doc again about other options.

I had them for a year. I gained 45 pounds. I think it may have had something to do with me devolping PCOS. I could be wrong though. I would never have them again

I hope that she knows that she's doing giving it to me. I really can't afford to gain more weight or lose any more hair.

I did Depo for a year. I started right after I had my son(6 wk checkup). In the 12 weeks between shots I gained 16lbs! A friend of mine was on Depo for 9 years. Just went off a year ago, and with no change in diet or exercise lost over 40 lbs. Unfortunately, she is now having an awful time with AF being very heavy. I cant recommend Depo to anyone, PCOS or not.

I was on Depo for a year and half and didn't notice any big weight difference or any difference in thinning hair. I think everyone reacts differently to different things. However, being a cyster, I really don't think Depo was the thing for me to be on personally because of the lack of menstrual cycles (though I have to admit it was good BC and easy).

hi , i was on depo for about 2 yaers when i was 18 and 19 years old...even that young i remember the effects it had on me . I gained 20lbs and went fro a skinny girl to a pretty chubby one . also I developed cystic acne and lost a huge amount of hair. I mean people that hadnt seen me in awhile would litteraly comment on my thin hair. it turned paper thin. sad thing was i was so young i didnt really care about the effects or notice how ugly I was getting. I just didnt want to get pregnant. so, thats my experience with it. i was depressed but thought it was just me. now that i look back I wish I would have researched the shot more. Maybe you wont have such a bad reaction to it. just pay attention to how your body feels. then when its time for your next shot you will know if it was bad for you are not. good luck and I hope the best for you!

I was on it for 6 months and gained 40 pounds with no change in my diet or exercise level! I also had breakthrough bleeding and acne during that time. Before depo, my periods were regular and normal. Within a year of stopping it, I developed PCOS. I firmly believe the shot was a major cause in me having this.

I was pretty much normal before Depo, I had TWO shots at 17 and in very little time, I was feeling SO BAD! My stomach swelled up, my periods went to black, horribly smelling paste like bleeding! I broke out with horrible cystic acne, had TERRIBLE mood swings, severe depression, panic/anxiety attacks and worst of all, I gained 100 pounds that year.

We (DH and I, long story) didn't have a lot of money then, so we were living on bologna and ramen noodles. We did that for about a 6 months prior to having the DEPO, and I didn't gain even a single pound! Ever since the Depo, I have gained about 50 - 100 pounds a year... topping out at nearly 600 pounds. I had WLS and am now a much healthier weight!

I blame the Depo for my PCOS becoming severe! Before Depo I had normal periods, hardly had acne, NO excess body hair, NO panic attacks, mood swings etc and I wasn't very overweight. After getting Depo, and not changing anything, still remaining as active as a 17 year old was.... I gained weight and my PCOS went out of control!

I believe that the Depo has caused this condition to become as worse as it is, and I've read many things over the years to know I am not the only one, that Depo has screwed up! I believe that is why its so hard for me to get pregnant now too... despite it being so many years ago! You couldn't pay me enough to go on it (or any b/c) EVER AGAIN!!! If I could sue the maker of Depo, I would!!!!!

Good luck!

Not to scare you, but I believe Depo is what threw my PCOS into full swing. I think I've had it all along, but I gained 100 lbs (on an already overweight body) on it, and a year after the one shot I got, I had problems with prolonged periods, which ended me up in a D&C and hysterescopy. I was then diagonosed with PCOS, Insulin Resistance and uterine polyps. It's been almost 6 years since that happened and my uterine problems are getting worse now. ETA: Depo was the only form of hormonal bc I have ever used and is why I am so leery about getting on the pill...but the pill is a LOT different than the shot.

I wish I had NEVER gotten the shot. It has completely ruined my life.
