Hi,
I have been having issues with ovarian cysts since I was 16. Everyone turned a blind eye to all of my other symptoms for many years. I was even told at 16 I would Probably not have children but they never told me why, I never asked becuase I never saw myself wanting them. I have been in the hospital many times with abdominal pain and they write it off as cysts that ruptured after testing me for appendicitis each time (along with running up a 5,000.00 bill). I finally made it in to an OBGYN that has a clue to what PCOS is last Tuesday. After asking me a few basic question about the last decade we deducted that I have had AF visit a total of 12 times and the last 4 have been in the last 4 months after I dropped 30 of the 55 lbs I picked up within a year. He immediatly looked at me and told me I have PCOS - into ultrasound I went and that just confirmed what he had said. I have a text book "string of pearls" with thinning hair, crazy weight fluxuations, cysts, and seizures from an allergy to sugar substitutes which is now attributed to an insulin resistance.
So here I am scared, in pain and emotionally hurt. I am glad to finally know what it is but at the same time I am terrified.
Thank you for letting me vent.
Welcome to SC! I'm basically a newbie myself (joined about a week ago) I'm sorry that it took so long to find a good Dr! I was fortunate enough to find a good Dr after ttc for 9 months .
I think that you will like it here. Are you ttc? If so good luck!!

Thank you Aydenn , no I am not TTC. Just trying to figure out what is wrong with me and why at 26 yrs old do I not have a period. I had decided I did not want children unless I found my ideal of a mate which I thought would never happen. Well It happened, We were actually in Highschool together 10 years ago and both liked the other without saying anything. Kinda funny how things stuff works out. He is the first man I could see myself having children with and it looks like that will not be happening.

You still might be able to have children. Don't give up hope yet! I'm not TTC yet, but its in the back of my mind. I know its going to be a hard road, so I may start trying soon. (I'm also 26 and have no period.)

My bloodwork is coming back as we speak, I received a call today and got partial results (I wish they would have waited but its ok) Once they get in all of the lab work they will decide what meds to put me on. I am looking over the boards and realizing that PCOS may be linked to my depression and crazy mood swings? Will meds help with this and my crazy weight thing?

The meds should help, I know with metformin it has helped a lot of people loose weight, I'm pretty sure I've heard people say it helped with depression too, but you might want to ask in that section of the board.

Just wanted to say hello and welcome. I can relate to so much of what you said- always had symptoms and knew something was wrong, but so many dr's just blew me off. I finally got diagnosed, which was a relief, but so overwhelming to think of all that's involved, getting treated, changing my lifestyle, etc. Lots of info and support here to help you though, good luck.
Hi Angels8 - certainly sounds like you've had a long journey to getting your diagnosis. At least you know what it is now and they can start treating you properly. It's a small positive I know, but it's a step forward.
You post struck a cord as it reminded me when I was at Uni. At the second I would get my period I would be crippled with sharp pain. This always seemed to be a Saturday so I'd see some disgruntled male doctor on call (NHS government health care) who told me to take 2 Panadol and deal with the cramps! He didn't believe me that they weren't normal cramps. After visiting him for the 3rd consequitive period I gave up and went to see my doctor during the week when the pains weren't so bad. By the time I actually got a hospital appointment (some 2 months later) the sharp pains were gone. I guess that may have been a cyst but I was never told and guess will never know now. I could've had PCOS since then - 12 years ago!
What gruels me about PCOS is it's so cruel on our emotions too. As if women don't worry about our weight as it is! And as if we don't worry about hair and children. It really seems to strike right at what matters to us.

Yes My test results came back. I came back normal on all of them, however he is still saying I am PCOS; I am anovulatory (sp) and cystic. So I will be put on Metformin and Nuvaring (sp). I have some rather odd instructions for some of the dosing, but I will see if it works.

Most of my numbers are normal as well, there are like 2 that are a tiny bit elevated. So you must just have a mild case like me. Good luck with your meds I hope they help you!
