I've known that I've probably had PCOS for awhile, but I've been bad and haven't done a thing about it. I finally decided I NEED to do something because of my blood sugar problems...I'm currently awaiting blood test results. My first batch 6 months ago indicated some elevated levels, and the doctor said it was borderline PCOS. But now I've gained more weight so I'm sure it's worse.
Anyways, I'm in college and heading back from Xmas break so I'm depressed enough. But having to completely alter the way I eat is really bothering me. I'm used to eating complete junk at the dining hall lol...I'm not sure how to adjust to a diabetic type diet. Any tips on getting started? I've done a lot of research, but I'm still worried. Thanks.
There are several different diets you can go on with PCOS, or be like me and make up your own
My suggestion is that you might want to just start out by eating less bread, pasta and sweets. I know college is very stressful, and you might want to load up on carbs, but trust me, you will feel better once you start eating less breads and sweets.
Some lower carb foods most college dining halls have:
Salads
Grilled Chicken
Burgers without the bread
Fresh fruit with Cottage cheese
Taco salads without the chips
Eggs
Grilled fish
Some great suggestions! Lately, I'm finding that a lot of fruits and veggies, cut up and ready-made help when you may want a snack or something. Why not buy some healthy food to keep in your home/dorm, etc., to help you resist the temptation to eat the non-healthy food in the dining hall...The dining hall has to offer healthy stuff too, you just have to choose them I remember when I went to CSULB, I gained the freshman 15-which turned into the Freshman 100 lol
Just some thoughts...Be diligent, oh, and another thing, hopefully the dining hall will offer low-fat or non-fat frozen yogurt, not even as fattening as ice cream, and somewhat healthy....nummmmyyy!!!

LOL, well, there are some low carb desserts you can buy for your dorm room that taste SOOO good, you woudln't believe they are low-carb. I love low-carb ice cream, especailly tripple chocolate with chocolate chips and fudge!
I wish I had known about PCOS in college. I went from 155 lbs to 185 lbs in 4 years of college. My meals were pretty much only burgers, fries, ice-cream, and deep fried chicken patty sandwiches.
Also get a good diet buddy in college. They are great to go for long walks with when you crave junk food instead
LOL yea, the freshman 15 ended up being the college 45 for me....started at around 120ish and am up to 165. But I am going to make it stop here and go back in the other direction.
Thanks for all the recs, I will check out the low carb snacks for sure.
I too have this same problem. It is so easy to eat the junk for...so very handky and fast. Look at the junk food as an addiction.
Once you face it, then you can fight it.
I wish you the best for great success.
