Angry depression

I having been having problems with depression and irritability for approximately 2 years which was when I was diagnosed with PCOS. It affects my sex life a great deal and I feel really bad for my husband of 7 years. The doctors say PCOS doesn't have anything to do with it, it's probably just my weight. I don't believe this to be true because I have had a problem with my weight for much of my life and did not have a problem before being diagnosed with PCOS.

It has made me very uncomfortable with myself. Since I have been reading this site, I believe that it could be associated with my condition. Is it related to the PCOS and what is the best resolution to help with the depression and irritability? Redstang

I don't know if depression is *caused* by PCOS, but I certainly think it is related. Of course, depression is related to almost any chronic health problem, I would think. You may want to consider an antidepressant of some kind. The downside of that is many of them decrease sex drive, which is probably not what you want. However, Wellbutrin is an antidepressant that is not supposed to do that (my doc told me it actually increases sex drive in some people). I think there are some other new antidepressants that don't affect sex drive as well. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

I think that because our moods are so affected by hormones, and PCOS is one huge hormonal imbalance, that yes, depression is totally related. Not only is it the hormones, but it's having to deal with weight gain, and poor self image related to acne and body hair as well. And having to deal with a chronic illness. But let's not make ourselves victims. Let's take control. I'm going to get some counseling as well as go to a doc and see if I can't get my hormones straightened out. I can't wait to feel better!

Default it must be

It must be related there are so many of us suffering from depression and sex drive problems. The hormone and emotion factory appears to have gone insane, and it doesn't just effect and fall in the drive, i want to make love to the hubby all the time, and any sort of rejection no matter how minor makes me feel unattractive and unwanted, thus depression gets worse. BF probably understands and is trying to make you feel better by showing you that he finds you attractive. Ah bless

I guess I am relieved to hear others have this problem... I have had issues with depression, feeling like my head is stuck in a fog. I also have had decreased sex drive for the last few years and it causes problems with my DH, he just doesnt understand, how could he, I dont really get it myself!

Hi, I also believe that pcos causes depression. I found an interesting study that talks about how treating pcos can lead to the complete remission of major depression, here's the link http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Abstract .

I would recommend anyone with depression to treat the pcos first, with metformin and maybe spiro (bcps can actually cause depression), and see if that also treats the depression.

Good luck!

PCOS, directly affects the hormone levels which in return can cause depression. However the depression can stem from a number of factors. Examples of these are frustration over illness, the cosmetic appearence etc. Or even events that are not health related.

If the depression is interfering with your abiltiy to function on a day to day basis then you should seek help. If your doctor will not support you in the quest then get a second opinion. Antidepressants will help although it takes up to 4 weeks to notice any difference. It is worth it.

Good luck to you, let us know how you are doing!

Default Depression

I would like to thank everyone for their feedback on the depression issue. It's not something that impairs my life but it's not something I am use to. The most frustrating thing is not having a sex drive. Redstang

I know exactly how you feel about the lack of sex drive, I could live without it(how sad). I know that having children doesn't help, especially as my 3 year old daughter still won't sleep in her bed at night for long, but my DH says he finds me so attractive. It is hard to make him understand that it isn't him.

You gotten some great advice from the others so I don't have a lot. But, I did want to say that I had heard that gingo biloba *sp* helps with low sex drive when you're on anti-depressants. Maybe it would help otherwise as well. Hugs, Lendi
