Struggling with depression seems to be a major problem for me. My doctor asked if I felt like I needed some medication to help with that. I've got mixed feelings about it. Is anyone else on medication for depression, and if so, what are the benefits and downfalls that you have noticed.

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
When my doc first suggested mood meds, I really had a hard time...I know I am not crazy! I feel like I'm basically a fairly emotionally strong person...but I know depression!
So after fighting, and losing, the emotionally stability battle for a long time I finally agreed to try the meds. The meds were like a light switch, everything clicked. I feel normal and can stay that way no matter what kind of crazyness is happening around me. My hormones are messed up, and that messes up everything else along the line, including my emotional reactions. Do what you can to fix the hormones, but give yourself a break and be open to fixing the emotional as well as the physical side effects.
My doc explained the psych drugs to me this way: if you have a broken leg, you get a cast to support it while it heals. That's exactly what the depression meds do for your emotions...gives you support while you heal yourself.

My husband sees a big difference in me, Im not moody anymore, I have energy, I love myself now... It was the best thing in the world for me to go on, if you are suffering from depression i recommend getting on something, because life is something you should enjoy. Im on citalopram hbr. Effexor changed my life. I like the light switch analogy. When I finally found the right drug at the right dose...I can't even describe it. And no side effects, heck, no downshide at all, with the right drug.
I hate to sound like a drug addict, and I know they don't work for everyone, but oh my gosh, when they do!!!! It's like night and day.
One day, about two weeks after I started, I was just sitting on the bus, and I realized I was smiling. No act, no one around to pretend to. Just a normal, natural, spontaneous smile. I just about cried - for happiness!
I think it helps if you think of it like your PCOS. Sometimes your brain needs help with dealing with hormones - just instead of reproductive hormones, it's happy hormones. I like the broken leg analogy too.
You might want to check out the depression forum on SC, it's pretty good.

Hi, yes, I'm in the same boat. I was diagnosed in July of 2005 and didn't go to Meds until Novemeber of the same year...I have had luck with both Lexapro and Wellbutrin, actually both, to be honest, have been a true lifesaver.

I also struggle with depression and went to counselling for many years. I never have taken meds, but i've always thought i probably should. I would say to talk about your concerns you have about taking the meds with your dr and if you're comfortable with your dr's advice to try them and see how they work for you. This is definatley an area i need to get treatment for, and will as soon as things are a little less hectic. Good luck to you!
I've been taking Prozac for nearly 2 weeks now, this is the second time that I've been on anti-depressants, the first about 4 years ago. It did a lot of good for me first time around as I was really in a bad way back then.
I made the decision to go back on the anti-depressants but it wasn't an asy decision for me. They can have some side effects (which I'm currently dealing with) but they do pass. They can also take some time to work and it can be 6-8 weeks, so unfortunately it's not an overnight process.
Make the decision that feels right for you and if you do decide to go ahead with anti-depressants and you really don't feel it is right for you, speak to your doctor and see if you can try another.
I hope that everything works out for you.
