I'm just curious how that works if you have/are on depression medication. Will that keep you from passing your home study? These days it seems that so many people are on them, would they be looked down upon? Thanks in advance Ladies!

Both my husband and myself take meds for depression/anxiety, etc...and it was not an issue in our homestudy. In some instances a letter from your physician or psychiatrist will be needed to say that you are capable of parenting, etc... We got a letter from our therapist and my husband got an additional letter from his psychiatrist. What they care about is that you are being TREATED for whatever disorder/depression you have.
Good Luck!

That has been my biggest issue with adopting, didn't wanna get turned down for something as simple as anxiety medication. Thanks, that puts my mind at ease.

You're quite welcome. And try not to worry too much....it's not as daunting as it seems!

I have been on anti-depressents and dx'd bipolar in the past. My social worker was interested in whether I had been to counseling and how long it had been since I had taken anything. She asked me if I would take them again or consider seeing the doc again. I told her that I would do what I had to, to stay healthy, mentally and physically... she seemed to like that answer. Anyhow, we now have an approved homestudy and after those few questions, it was mentioned again.

So what kind of questions do they ask at a homestudy?

Umm, they ask about everything! You should get a whole bunch of paperwork to fill out. Are you looking at domestic, international, or foster care?
We filled out a family profile with questions about childhood, how we were raised, our vaules, parenting style, our future goals, how we celebrated holidays, etc.. The stack of papers was at least 3" thick and dh and I had seperate sections to fill out.
For our homevisits, it was like having a friend come to visit and get to know us. She was only supposed to be there for an hour or so but she was at our house for at least 3, just talking and trading stories. She looked around the house, talked with the kids, etc..
I have heard a lot of other people describe the visits the same way. I've heard some not so great ones too but the main goal is to get adoptive parents so most case workers really try and work with the family.

DH and I would want a domestic adoption. We have talked about it here and there, and if we decide to do it, it would be done in Florida. Just trying to get all the info to get an idea of what to exspect.
