I was just wondering is there any link between depression and met?
I have been on met now since mid September and I recently have been experiencing mild depression. I have never had this before. Just the other night I was sitting on my couch with a container of pudding and I could not take the cover off and started to cry like a baby. I can also be in the best mood one minute and feel very depressed the next.
So my question is...Has anyone else experienced depression since being on metformin?
my old psychiatrist's opinion (she is in another state thats why she old not cuz she was bad) was that the met was working and i was making the correct levels of hormones that in the past i wasn't making and the shift in hormones was causing mood swings and aggrivating my depression. as crappy as it is the fact that you are having mood swings may actually be a good thing. i know it sucks, if it is seriously interfering with your life i would see a psychitrist or talk to a therapist. if you do see a psychiatrist just make sure that they know you have pcos and bring some info on it with you since most of them don't know what it is and you should also let your doc that is treating your pcos know that you are seeing a psychiatrist and what if anything they put you on. if they do put you on a psych med it may be temporary just til your body gets used to the new shifting levels of hormones.

If women are supposed to be less rational and more emotional at the beginning of our menstrual cycle when the female hormone is at its lowest level, then why isn't it logical to say that, in those few days, women behave the most like the way men behave all month long?--Gloria Steinem
About the depression, met. depletes vit B 12. This affects dopamine in the brain, which has to do with mood. This could very well be causing your depression. I was feeling depressed, and found out this info and started taking B complex vitamins and it has helped a lot. Hope this helps! (I copied this from an old post). By the way I had to stop taking Birth control pills, because they made me depressed too.
Hugs Julie, so sorry you're feeling depressed sweetie. I was diagnosed with clinical depression not long after my PCOS diagnosis and my doc gave me prozac, which helps me a lot.
Hope you feel better soon, you know I"m here for you always. You're such a wonderful cyster.
Hugs
Jenny

From things I have been reading there is some link between metformin and depression. I have clinical depression & anxiety disorder, was diagnosed in 2002, but it was around long before then.
Vitamins help, and for me I need Effexor XR, was on Paxil & Zoloft, but they were not chemically compatible with me, Effexor has worked for 4 years now.
Mild depression is something to monitor. Mention it to your regular physician or OBGYN...whichever you see more often. Keep a journal to see if there is a pattern also. Very often depression is linked with your hormone level changes.
Good luck, and just know you are never alone.
