Default Is Depression more common with Yasmin than other BCPs?

I'm going to ask my doctor about maybe going back on the pill, but I really don't like the idea, especially if it's going to make me depressed. My depression is pretty stable right now, but I think going on the pill would probably make it worse.

I noticed Yasmin has a high dose of progesterone. Does that mean it's more likely to have depression as a side effect?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks,
Hillary

I think every pill affects every woman differently. I had never had depression in my life until I started the pill. Firstly, I was on Levlen, and I was constantly emotional. My specialist changed me to Yasmin, and that was even worse. I got really frightened of how I was feeling towards my fiance and nephew (it got to the stage that I felt like I didn't know how to love them). I have no doubt in my mind that it was the Yasmin that caused those feelings and my depression, but maybe it was made worse because I'm also on a high dose of Androcur. Either way, I'm back on Levlen and am also taking anti depressants, and I'm feeling so much better. I wasn't informed when I started taking the medications, but will make sure I am from now on. It's the best way to be.

I posted on this in the BCPs forum, but I wanted to share my experience with Yasmin. I had been on Wellbutrin SR for depression for about four months when I started back on the pill and my depression symptoms got a lot worse. Especially the last couple months on Yasmin, I had decided to leave my husband and felt like it was the end of the world even though initially on the Wellbutrin I felt a lot better. Now I've been off the Yasmin for a couple weeks, I see a marked improvement in my mood.

My recommendation, if you are already feeling leery about going back on the pill, DON'T DO IT. When I called my GYN about going off the Yasmin, the first thing I said was "I hate being on hormones!" And she was like "first of all, if you hate hormones you shouldn't be on them." Well duh. I felt like I didn't have much choice when it came to birth control but now I'm back to the diaphragm and it feels okay.

Good luck! ((hugs))
