Depression from multiple IVF births
And finally, a survey of 249 mothers who conceived with the aid of assisted reproduction has raised concerns that multiple births may bring significant psychosocial risks.
In addition to a 70 percent increase in risk for maternal depression, Marcia Ellison (Harvard Medical School, USA) and fellow researchers report two-fold increases in risks for low quality of life and social stigma, and a nearly five-fold increased odds of struggling to meet basic material needs, with each additional multiple birth child.
"To increase patients' informed decision-making, assisted reproduction providers might consider incorporating a discussion of these risks with all patients before they begin fertility treatment, and holding the discussion again if the treatment results in a multiple gestation," suggests the team.
