I was just wondering if you have PCOS and Depression, how much of it is because of the PCOS. I have been diagnosed as being depressive. Sometimes I can go for a long time without meds and function fine, other times its like I am a sudden mess. Little things upset me and make me stressed or cry or whatever. It is like I am a hormonal wreck waiting to happen. I have my first psych appointment in a long time next week. I am going in there like I have a clean slate and never been diagnosed as anything particular except being oppressed. A few years back I was told I was bi-polar but the last psych I saw for a couple of visits was not convinced that was what I had. Sadly I was not able to go back because of lack of insurance. The psych I am going to see on Wednesday, I honestly am not sure about but she is the only one I can see. So I am going to try and be prepared for it the best that I can. Honestly though I am nervous about it all. I am still going through some stuff and trying to get a diagnosis of PCOS. It isn't 100% confirmed or not yet but based on my labs and symptoms I have had I am sure of I have it. My doctor was mainly wanting to see if it was a thyroid problem or not. Thyroid is clear so that is not it. Anyways onto the depression thing. Any ideas how I can sum up my past mental history and be short, sweet to the point and put it down onto paper to talk with the psych about. My thoughts tend to race sometimes so it makes it hard for me to remember stuff and make sense sometimes. So I am trying to figure out how to get the most out of the appointment and make as much sense as I can without sounding rushed. Thanks
your first appt will most likely be a general intake where they will ask you some general info about different components of your life. take your time when explaining your psy history and pcos. it may take a few sessions and all of that info is important.
/sigh, so i went to the appointment today. All she did was ask me about my previous health issues, if i had ever been in a psych hospital and upped my prozac dosage. In and out and that was it.
May I heartily recommend that you go to a clinic with joint psychological/psychiatric services. Quite frankly, psychiatrists shouldn't handle this sort of thing alone. A good mental health clinic -- and I mean it, one devoted entirely to mental health -- will have you sitting down with a therapist, who will then, after a session or two, give your file to a psychiatrist with a recommendation. Then you sit down with the psychiatrist, talk less about emotions and more about physical symptoms, and then you would get a medication. Then you would continue to see the therapist regularly, so that he or she can observe any changes in your mood or patterns, and be able to add an objective viewpoint to how well the medication is working (because, quite frankly, it's next to impossible to tell on your own).
Good places will work like that. Sounds like you got stuck with a moron (of which there are many). But don't give up; keep looking until you find something that works. It's so worth it once you do.

By the way, if you are bipolar, Prozac is pretty much the worst thing they can give you. So you need to be even more careful that you've got the right diagnosis.

Thanks but currently I do not have insurance and shes the only psych I can see. There are therapists there but due to finances and trying to get my lack of periods etc situated and what not I have not been able to set up an appointment. As for the prozac, it is actually the only antidepressant that I have ever taken that didn't give me a bunch of side effects. Normally psychs get me on different meds that make me less able to function, right now I am functioning and am doing rather well in some regards and needing improvement in others. I no longer have any anxiety issues etc, though was still deppressed at times. Before when I was seeing psychs I ended up being in more of a coma state then when I started which makes me less able to function. Having my daughter I can not do that. I need to be able to care for her so doing things one bit at a time at the moment. Honestly I have gotten use to psychs not listening to me about side effects of meds etc. One of the viscious cycles I have been part of. I went three years without meds and did alright, until I started to get sick. I guess the stress and pain from that crashed me. I had PID for a bit, and thats when they found out about my cysts etc. It was the one thing that got my doctor digging for a PCOS diagnosis.
That's too bad about your insurance (though if the Prozac works, at least it sounds like it's not bipolar). Have you tried some non-profit clinics? I go to one (I didn't have insurance coverage until recently), and they often have very reasonable sliding scales.

Robin this is part of a clinic. Sadly where I live its the only one, and even then I am lucky. I live with my dad, aunt, boyfriend and daughter and between them all are really over the household limit income levels. Even though dad and aunt do not help us with food and such, just providing a shelter. The place I am going now agreed to see under the terms that James and I rent from my dad, even though they really are not suppose to.
