Then I searched on google for ovarian dermoid cysts. Aside from finding out the extent of their nastiness (the hair and teeth and other things that can be in them), I have this understanding that they don't go away on their own. Am I wrong?
So then my letter states that my NP recommends that I continue oral contraceptives (which I've been taking for PCOS for months) and schedule a repeat ultrasound in 8 weeks.
Does this mean she expects my birth control pills to shrink the cyst? Do BCPs even shrink this type of cyst? And if they do, once shrunk, the cyst would still be there, correct? And various websites state that, though there is a small chance, these cysts can be/turn malignant.
Is there a valid reason for not removing it? Isn't it being "gross" reason enough (Haha)? I mean it IS causing me pain, which is why I went to see the NP in the first place!
Any input is appreciated. Arf! |

(((Hugs))) Good luck!
PS: The hair and teeth thing should be enough to remove it!

Do you have access to a GYN surgen yet?
To get things going, I would "suggest" you call the dr's office and ask for a referal(if one is needed) to a GYN surgen. Then find one and talk to them. That would be the doctor who knows what needs to come out and what can be "watched".
Hand in there!

GGBUNNY - I was thinking about what you said about the BCPs and me not getting pregnant in case I needed surgery. You might be right. I also think that she thinks that I think that (haha) I will stop taking the BCPs because I kind of made a suggestion to her that the BCPs might be causing some problems for me and that I wanted new ones!
Patty - No, I don't have access to a Gyn surgeon yet, but I'll look into it!
Anyway, I don't really want to wait 8 weeks because in 8 weeks it will be summer and I probably fly back to California to visit my family! (Yay!!!) If it is to be removed, I want it to be removed before then. Besides, I've done some more reading and all the texts seem to point out that dermoids can cause torsion, infection, and rupture. Great.
I wonder how small it is. I think I should call them, but I'm afraid doctors! |

Points: 11,700.25 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 11,700.25 | Hello, I just wanted to say that 2 years ago, I had a dermoid cyst removed that had been there for about 4 years. The first time I went to have it looked at I found out that I was pregnant and my dr kept a close eye on it and after my second pregnancy I decieded to have it removed because it was causing me intense pain. It had gone from being 5 cmm to 2 cmms in 4 years. Luckily it didn't twist the ovary which would have caused me to have to remove that ovary. Although I did end up having a small part of the ovary removed a triangle piece as my dr described.
I would advise having it removed before it gets any bigger, as my dr said that waiting can cause more problems than having it removed when it is small. The chances it is malignant are very small. The chances that it ruprture or very high and therefore will hurt chances of becoming pregnant.
The surgery is a breeze, I went in on Friday and I was back to normal on Sunday.
I would really look into it and find out how big it is, find out exactly it is effecting the ovary and do ask about how it being there or not will affect you getting pregnant.
Why I waited after my first to have it removed is because it was growing some and they were afraid that removing might affect my ovary in some way....But after the baby was born it started causing tons of pain. He was 2 months old when I went in.
The first time I found out about it, it was small enough to remove without any worries and I set up the appointment to have it removed and found out that I was pregnant....
Good luck and let us know how things go

His was full of hair, eyelashes and nail peices...definately gross but he's glad its gone. They are something you are born with and only surgery can remove it.
GL!
