Its been quite a while since i have on this site and I really need to ask this question. I was dx with pcos last Sept (i have had it for over 10 years and my doctor did nothing about it) I switched Dr's and was put on metformin 500mg and the bcp to regulate my periods that i would go without for 12-16months at a time. Everything seemed to be getting better...my periods were back to normal, I had lost about 30 pounds then all of a sudden I was stuck there, no more weight loss. When I went back to the Dr I told her I thought my met needed to be increased...she would not do it. So I made an appointment with an endo and he increased my met from 500mg to 1500mg ER, and he kept me on the bcp and gave me spiro for the acne and all over body hair. He also told me how to diet by counting carbs. This was 5 months ago and nothing has improved. No weight loss, no improvement on the all over body hair. And I have had my period 3 times this month even though I am on the bcp.
So now that I told you a little bit about myself and my situation here is my question:
WILL A HYSTERECTOMY DO THE TRICK? I was thinking if it has to do with ovaries, if they are removed will the sydrome disappear? I know this may sound like a stupid question but I am desperate.
Any replies will be greatly appreciated. I want to bring this up to him at my next appt which is on Dec 13th.
PCOS is a syndrome of the endocrine system and is not limited to your reproductive organs. The only solution a hysterectomy brings is no more ovary pain - and a whole slew of new issues when you have to go through an early menopause.

Julie there are a lot of us that had had this syndrome long before dx. It is really frustrating to think about what if they found it earlier. No use to do that.
I realized that they probably would have put me on the pill and I can't eat that (I know that now) I would have gotten blood cloths.
I know a woman at my work who was diagnosed 20 years ago and that hasn't helped her at all. She has today diabetes, hypertension and is very obese and balding. All they did then was to help her conceive. We try to help each other. Her both daughters has PCOS too. She is my inspiration too stand strong and fight this.
First off doctors didn't know so much 10 years ago as they do now. (Still don't know much.) PCOS is awful but it isn't fatal not directly anyways. Don't try anything drastic that wont help.
I hope that we can beat this. Remember that you have all your cysters with you.

Thank you for your reply. I was just hoping that something could help. I am so frustrated and I feel I am losing a never ending fight. I feel that I just want to give up and who cares about weight, hair, and all the crap that comes along with it.
I know how you feel. I feel it too. Was just talking to a doctor today that seams to think that all my problems will go away if I just loose some weight. And in a way she assumes that I don't try and never have tried to loose weight and that I never exercise. I have been trying to loose weight all my life and it's very hard and that seems to be the only thing I can do to battle this thing.
I know exactly how frustrated you feel.
Lots of love Helena

julie, pcos can be a frustrating thing to live with. i would reccomend finding a good endocrinologist who can work you up and fine tune your meds. a hysterectomy, unfortunately will not correct your pcos b/c it doesn't correct the underlying hormonal abnormalities.

Hey Julie,
Hope youre doing better now. I just wanted to say, im in the same situation as you. But please DO NOT give up. A hysterectomy.........NO WAY, please dont think of that. That wil not be your end to problems, instead it will start a whole new set of problems. And together it might get worse. Atleast this way you have a chance of getting pregnant. There are so many soul cycters here, who never thought a chance in hell they could get pregnant and finally one day they did. DO not give up. YOU"RE WORTH IT. i know its hard. its hard on each one of us. im in the same boat as u. im taking met, spiro and Yasmin. I have NOT lost a pound in a yr, but still im hopeful. I know its very difficult to be hopeful. there are times when you're simply crushed. and nothing seems to do it. but believe me, one day you will make it thru this. I know its very hard, but this is constant battle. And you CAN NOT give IN or give up.......

I think that an hysterectomy should be you last option. I've been reading this book called "The Insulin Resistance Diet". I think that this diet will really help. I've lost 5 lbs so far in one month. PCOS is a curse! Everytime you get one thing to work something else happens and the weight comes back. We have to treat ourselves as if we were glass!(LOL) Give this book a try! I'm getting ready to do a full body cleanse soon because I read that if we don't our rid our body of toxins all of our efforts to treat and possibly cure this syndrome is wasted.
