Hi there - I'm new to this site. First, I'd like to say THANK GOD for this site. Although I know that PCOS is fairly common... it's so nice to know that there's resources and support out there. I was diagnosed at 14 y/o (I'm 23 now). Well, I had myself diagnosed at 12, related to some research I did, but my family doctor essentially told me I didn't know what I was talking about and wouldn't even do any bloodwork. (If you get a chance, read my little blurb about me on my profile... it's worth it to read what a knob my doctor was... lol). I've recently changed endo's to a female doc in the adult clinic - took me three years to get in from the endo I used to see at the local children's hospital, so I'm delighted. However, she just called me not 2 hours ago and gave me - over the phone, now - the results of my oral glucose tolerance test. Apparently I have impaired glucose tolerance. Again, I know this is common, but I am devastated. I already have high BP and am on medication for that, and my mom has Type II Diabetes. So my risk has skyrocketed. Now my doc wants to start me on Metformin. As a nurse, maybe I know too much, but all the possible side effects of Metformin sound A) frightening and b) miserable. I'm scared to death. Plus, I want to have children - soon - and the possible side effects of metformin in pregnancy are whoppers!! And, according to my CPS it's a Category B drug whose safety hasn't even been well established to use in pregnancy, and it's found in breastmilk. So right there, I'm scared to even try it, and if I do conceive on it, I basically can't breast feed!! I've spent all day basically crying and researching. If anyone has any advice at all, please either e-mail me at my private address or send me a message on here. Thanks so much.
From one newbie to another, welcome NFRN84! I actually had the opposite experience to yours -- wanting metformin but not being able to get it because of not being IR. I'm sorry you're feeling so overwhelmed, but I must say you're in the right place for support. Since I don't have experience with metformin I can't offer much in the way of advice, but there is a board specific to medications that you might want to check out for information and first-hand accounts of people's experience on it. I know everything piling up can be a pisser. Just take things one step at a time! Good luck.
Hi,
I had to beg for metformin and finally got it as I am IR, Anyway I'm on a low dose and have no side effects if anything I have more energy. About pregnancy and breast feeding etc, when I was was pregnant I was not IR and didn't need metformin. I did want to breastfeed which the matter was taking out of my hands. Basiscally I had an IUGR baby which meant baby was small and needed glucose, I lost alot of blood during c section so when I tried to breast feed it was not possible as baby was weak and needed a bottle, and sleepy so would not latch on. So basically my baby was breast and bottle fed so got the best of both worlds. Just so u know my son is a big bouncy almost 11mth old now so please do not worry.
If u are in situation where u are giving birth the last thing on your mind will be breast feeding etc. The wait for that little cry is an experience and when u hear it everything else is insignificant. However if possible breastfeed if u can as there is benefits to baby but dont beat yourself up if u cant. I partially breastfed and had to stop at 7 wks due to illness so u never know whats ahead.
Anyway! Try not to worry about stuff u will be fine, women are tough cookies!!!!
Thanks so much everyone! That info makes me feel so much better! I'm a terrible worrier and having some information to ease my mind has been great. I'll be sure to take this with me on my next appointment!
Welcome.... I have never heard of problems using Met while TTC, I have heard that it can actually help you TTC. Good luck, and we're here when ever you need an ear.
