I had a D&C following a miscarriage on Sept 4th. I just had my follow-up appointment yesterday. Since my husband and I are going to wait until March to start actually trying for a baby, I assumed that the doctor would put me back on BCP. He did not. He says that since we want to try in 6 months that BCP are not the answer. His point of view is that it takes 3-6 months for BCP's to get out of your system, so I should just use barrier methods. The problem I have with this is that, with PCOS, I may get cysts on my ovaries while I am not on BCP's. My question is: will not taking BCP's allow cysts to develop? Shouldn't I still take the BCP's at least until January?

Hi JustMe26. I think you have a valid point. I too develop my cysts quickly after coming off bcps. I don't see why you couldn't at least take bcps for a few months, and then give you body a couple of months without them before ttc. I got pg with my son last year w/in 3 months of coming off bcps, so it might actually assist the process as opposed to causing probs.
Wait a minute this is completely wrong for pcos women. PCOS women have a higher chance of getting pregnant the first month or 2 off of the bcp's because our hormones are normal for those few months. I got pregnant first month off of bcp's with the help of femara. There are others that got pregnant the first month off without anything. I would try to say this to your dr or find one that is willing to give you the bcps and yes you probably will get cysts while off of them.
When we mentioned TTC to the first doctor who diagnosed me, his first response was, "Well, if you want to get pg, you should take about two months of BCP because with PCOS that can jumpstart your system in normal mode".
I haven't taken BCP in years myself (had bad side effects) but he was pretty insistent that we should get BCP to TTC!

Not neccesarily. Some PCOS women do not get "jump started" in normal mode after BCP.
After BCP I was decidedly outside of normal for 6 mos. Even when doing my IVF cycles I did NOT get to normal just after BCP. Each woman is different.
If you want to continue to do the BCP just insist on it BUT please note that you do want to continue Met (or other insulin sensitizing med) and diet/exercise. Not only for the cysts but also because they do help with preventing mc in many cysters.
Some women do NOT have a recurrence of cysts once they do Met/diet/exercise combo. Personally, when I'm good and do a combo of all three all my symptoms subside, when I'm bad I do get the cysts and other symptoms.
