Question dexamethosone, why is prescribed, what is it meant to do?

Hi

I was wondering why women with pcos are given dexamethosone, and how do you know wether you need it or should be on it.

Gathering info for next doctors visit, and he is not very helpful so want to go armed with info

Thanks
Tracy

Tracy,

I am not sure what it does exactly, but I do know that it has something to do with hormones and is supposed to fix whatever is wrong(too much testosterone, etc.). Like I said, I don't really know, I just followed Dr's instructions then with no questions really.

I took it along with Clomid when I was trying to conceive my first. It worked! I got pregnant on my second IUI and they took me off the Dex. Hope that helps.

Nikki

Hello

I take Prednisolone (same as dex), and it helps lower testosterone.

OK.... YOU COULD TAKE THIS TO DETERMINE IF YOUR TESTOSTORNE IS COMING FROM YOUR ADRENAL GLAND WHICH IS ABOVE YOUR KIDNEYS OR YOUR OVARIES. IT IS A TEST CALLED DEXAMETHASONE SUPPRESSION TEST. YOU TAKE 4 PILLS THROUGHOUT THE DAY FOR DAYS THEN ON YOUR FIFTH DAY YOU TAKE A BLLOD TEST. NOW IF IT IS DETERMINE IF YOUR TESTOSTERONE IS COMING FROM THE ADRENAL GLAND YOU COULD USE THIS MEDICINE. HOPE THIS HELPS.

I take prednisone (same as dex) because my 17oh (17 hydroxy-progesterone) was elevated. I've done 2 failed IVF's and 7 failed IUI's, switched RE's and what I had suspected for a long time was the one thing that was not tested and was wrong with me. Oh well live and learn. A hint for me was my DHEAS was elevated. If you see an elevation in your DHEAS I would certianlly recommed they do the 17oh test. Sometimes it's not PCOS but CAH (can't remember what that stands for) I have a variation of late onset of the disease. Best wishes

Trudy
