Default DH diagnosed with Sleep Apnea - anyone have this?

DH went to the Dr. today to get the results of his sleep study. Dr. diagnosed him with Sleep Apnea, and said that blood oxygen levels are supposed to be around 90? and that at times his got down to about 50? I'm not sure if those numbers are correct. Anyway, he has to do another sleep study, this time with the oxygen machine on and see if that improves and he will most likely have to have an oxygen machine at home.

I have a general idea of what sleep apnea is, but I'm not really clear on what living with it is like, or possible problems, etc, so if anyone could share their experiences, I'd appreciate it.

My husband was diagnosed with it too, about 2 years ago. His biggest problem was he would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for breath.

Then he developed pancreatitis, and lost about 40 pounds due to his illness. Since then his sleep apnea has not been that pronounced.

His doctor wanted to put him on one of those oxygen machines, so I asked some people about them. My nutrisionists' husband is on one and she told me that the machine hummed so loudly that neither of them could sleep, so he stopped using it. After a heart attack, he too lost a lot of weight and his symptoms decreased.

Other then the snoring, which sometimes wakes me up, but not usually, he's been pretty good, unless he has alcohol (which he isn't supposed to have anyway).

Hope that helps.

Beth

Hey

my dh has sleep apnea and it doesn't affect us in any adverse way. He merely sleeps with a sleep machine, i affectionately call it his snuffle.

It has a mask, tube and little machine that pushes air thru. IT does take a bit of time for them to get used to it. He sleeps so much better with it though, and i feel better knowing he is safe!

The machines has a little hum to it, that i personally find soothing. It's like a white sound machine. If he is gone i can't sleep well without it.

otherwise no biggie. I'm sure if he lost weight it would help, but it is inherited in his case. His dad has it too.

I have sleep apnea and have been using a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine for almost four years now. It has been a real life saver. It does take time to adapt to using it, but it is imperative that he try to do so to protect his health. Hopefully, his doctor will provide a complete and clear explanation about all of this to both of you, but until then I would recommend that you check out the excellent information at these websites:

National Sleep Foundation: Sleep Apnea Page

Sleepnet: Sleep Apnea Page

Sleepnet: Sleep Apnea Forums
