Well my DH had his diabetes test, and the doctor told him he is close to being diabetic but is not. Told him to improve his diet and exercise. However I question the test ! He just had to go in to a lab in the morning after fasting all night! And that is IT ! No one hour test no three our test nothing. If he is "close" to being diabetic on fasting test its scares me what a three or one hour test would show ! My fasting levels were/are always GREAT, but I am diabetic ! I do check his levels with my GlucoMeter and sometimes it has been high, but when recently I checked it one hour after a meal it was only 108. I am not sure what to think.
I asked my good friend who has diabetic how she was DX and she told me she only had one test after fasting just like DH. Is this normal ? Why did they make me do three tests ? My DH or my friend did not even have to drink the orange drink from hell !!

I THINK (and somebody correct me if I am wrong) that the glucose tolerance test that we have to do picks up insulin resistance, and diabetics do not necessarily have insulin resistance. IR is when your cells are not absorbing the insulin as well as they should and your pancreas has to crank out extra insulin. Diabetes is when your pancreas is not making enough insulin. I believe that my DH is diabetic AND insulin-resistant, so that's why I think diabetics can be IR, but they don't necessarily come hand-in-hand. Hopefully that explains it and it's the correct explanation!

Type II Diabetes is when your pancreas is either not making enough insulin or your body is not using it efficiently. The only truly accurate test is the fasting test where you take the sample after fasting and then drink the glucose liquid and test again after a couple of hours. The level of the sugar in your blood at that time will show how well your body is using the insulin to process the sugar. What probably happened to your DH is he had a finger prick after fasting and his number was high enough to be concerned but not high enough for a fasting test. The doctor advised him to watch what he ate and exercise because exercise helps your body's insulin work more efficiently. When people say they have IR Diabetes it is really just another way to say Type II. Type I is when your body does not produce insulin at all. (Juvinile Diabetes is also know as Type I and Adult Onset Diabetes is known as Type II) Sorry I rambled.

I agree ladies. I was diagnosed 10/02 with diabetes and all they did was an inital finger prick. My fasting level was 394. Afterwards, I had the A1c and other bloodwork done. I've never had to drink anything orange. My hubby is also diabetic and it was discovered during routine bloodwork 3 years ago not to mention he always had a sweet/fruity scent to his breath.
