Can someone please let me know what exactly DHEA is? My doctor said mine was off the charts, so she's sending me to endo. What is a normal level?

I had an elevated DHEAS level and my Dr put me on dexamethasone which is a steroid to lower it. An increased DHEAS level can indicate an over-active adrenal gland. normal range is 35-450ug/dl. mine was over 500. Dexamethasone decreased it though and it's now in the 120s.

DHEAS is a male hormone that may cause excess body hair and may cause excess weight gain. It is usually high in PCOS women. Normal is 35-430 mcg/dl.
Mine was 166, which is normal.

Diagnosed September 2005
Age 26
Initial Symptoms: Irregular cycles, hirutism, weight gain, depression, panic attacks.
Meds: Glucophage 750mg x 3, b-complex w/ex folic acid
Weight loss: 40lbs in first year
Diet: Low carb/High Protein, whey protein shakes
Since prego: prenatals with 1mg of folic acid, still continuing with high dose of glucophage, colace, 6 ultrasounds that look good so far.
