Default Dheas

I have recently been to a new dr and she ran even more test then the first one I went to which is fine with me. However, my testosterone levels were high which is consistant with PCOS as with all my other symptoms. However she did a DHEAS test and those levels were high as well. She is sending me to a endocrinologist. Can some people tell me their experiences with this type of dr and what the DHEAS test may signify?

Low levels of DHEAS may be due to adrenal dysfunction hypopituitarism - a condition that causes decreased levels of the pituitary hormones that regulate the production and secretion of adrenal hormones. Normal DHEAS levels, along with other normal androgen levels, may indicate that the adrenal gland is functioning normally or (more rarely) that an adrenal tumor or cancer present is not secreting hormones. Normal levels of DHEAS may be seen with PCOS, as this disorder is usually related to ovarian androgen production (primarily testosterone).

Elevated levels of DHEAS may indicate an adrenocortical tumor, adrenal cancer, or adrenal hyperplasia. Increased levels of DHEAS are not diagnostic of a specific condition; they usually indicate the need for further testing to pinpoint the cause of the hormone imbalance.

Got this from this website when you google DHEAS THE TEST.

My DHEAS is also high! My RE had me collect my urine for a 24 hour period. I believe they test the urine for your cortisol levels. If your cortisol levels are high, it may indicate a tumor. My cortisol levels were normal. My RE said some women with PCOS also have a high DHEAS because it is a form of testerone. This is my best understanding of it all!

Ok so what is normally done in those situations. I just wanted to have a baby and then I found all this out. Any suggestions or information on this would be great.

I am in your same shoes!! I have a very high dheas > 500 and at times elevated free and bioavailable testosterone, low SHBG, low HDL, and total testosterone < 40. I have some greek heritage. I was diagnosed with PCOS however, I think that I may have late adult onset congenital hyperplasia. The symptoms can be vary simialr. I also have allergies and history of asthma, and positive thyroid antibodies. I have been to multiple doctors non of which seem to know much about figuring this out. I had one miscarriage and would like to try again, but I am afraid until I figure this out. I am on Met ER 2000 mg/day; if it is LOCAH then I should be on low dose steriods which I am scared of for weight reasons.. I am going to a new MD and going to ask for ACTH testing, genetic testing for LOCAH, and adrenal CT... So frustrating to not know.. My FSH and LH are great no problems... so this is why I think the free testosterone issues are from the elevated DHEAS from the adrenals.

Keep us posted, best to you!
