Weezy,
Ask your doc to do a fasting insulin test on you, which is different from a fasting blood sugar test. It's important that you know where you are in terms of insulin resistance now, since eventually it can lead to diabetes. BCP's only mask the symptoms, but you need to treat the root cause to really get a handle on things. Insulin resistance is now believed to be the root cause of PCOS (IR means too much insulin, and insulin is a master hormone that controls the reproductive hormones causing them to get out of whack). There was a recent study that seems to indicate that there is another factor in all of this; they say that women with PCOS not only have IR, but that there is a pancreatic cell dysfunction (a genetic thing) that causes overproduction of insulin.
Here are two links with info about insulin resistance and PCOS: http://www.soulcysters.net/showthread.php?t=56271 http://www.soulcysters.net/showthread.php?t=10914
I was diagnosed with PCOS in 1984 and went untreated until my diabetes diagnosis in 2001. I sure wish I knew then what I know now! I also wish primary care physicians would be more knowledgable about the medical complications down the road for women with PCOS, since it often leads to metabolic syndrome (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol).
HTH,
Linda
