Hi everyone... I'm new here to the board, but I am so glad to find all of you. I have PCOS and Diabetes Type II (I suspect the PCOS had something to do with that). I'm on a low carb diet of no specific kind... I just try to eat things with a low glycemic index number...and I'm on 500 mg of Glucophage. The thing is...lately, like in the last month or two my bloodsugars are still way too high an hour or two after I eat a meal. I've tried cutting portions in half and they are still high. It's almost as if anything I eat or drink just sky-rockets my sugars except water, of course. I have started to exercise three days a week and I admit, it's just cycling, but it's something. I'm wondering if my Glucophage dosage is just too low?? I'm having a GTT on Wednesday of next week to find out for sure. Just out of curiosity..what's the normal dosage for someone with Diabetes Type II?

PCOS, Diabetes Type II, awaiting a surgery date for hysterectomy
When I was first diagnosed with the PCOS and Type II Diabetes I was started on 1000 mg daily, then moved up to 1500, and then 2000mg.
500 does seem a little low. I just wanted to tell you not to get discouraged, I understand the woes and frustration with still getting high numbers despite cutting back the carbs and what not.
I have also cut my carbs and followed a low GI diet and have one heck of a time with controlling my numbers at times. Recently my doctor started me on a pill called Amaryl, and it has helped stabilize my numbers tremendously. Even on the days I don't do so well on my diet. The only problem is the reason he put me on Amaryl was because I'm on steroids because of asthma which causes very very high numbers, but I'm gonna beg him to let me stay on them!! I haven't felt this "normal" as far as the sugar stuff is concerned since I was diagnosed. Even when I was on insulin I wasn't getting numbers this good.

welcome cyster,I too am on Amaryl and I like alot. It really help with my BS. I did try the Byetta for a month but it did not lower my BS good enough. I am on 1700mgs of metformin. My question to you is how long have you been on the metformin. I think it takes a few months to start seeing the results from the metformin. HTH

Thanks so much to both of you. I haven't heard of this other med before. I've been on the Met (Glucophage) for about a year. I am really curious how my GTT will turn out. Argh, this is so frustrating! I'll ask my doctor about that other med. Thanks so much for the encouragement!

PCOS, Diabetes Type II, awaiting a surgery date for hysterectomy
I have PCOS and Diabetes II too. I'm also doing the Low GI thing. I was diagnosed in late September with both. My blood sugar was at 16!!! Today, fasting, it was 4.7 which is about where it should be.
It does take a while to settle down. My levels came down to around 9 with 3 weeks of low GI diet and exercise. I couldn't get it any further than that so I'm on metformin, 1000mg daily. My mother is also diabetic but her sugar levels were lower so she just takes 500mg of metformin daily.
However, even with the merformin my blood sugars remain high (about 7) if I don't exercise. I really can't stress this enough. If I got out and do 30 mins of walking a day, 5 days a week, or even split it up, it's so much easier to keep the sugar level under control. If I don't exercise, I get irritable and my blood sugars stay high.
So: it might just be too low a dosage...what works for some people doesn't work for others. And also, the mets works its best when combined with diet and exercise. Since you seem to have the diet down, maybe a little more exercise would help?
