All my life, especially since the onset of puberty, weight started piling up, around my middle, like my rear end was on my front. I had a period at 13 for like 3 days, then one at 15 for 3 weeks, heavy nonstop. Then I never had a natural cycle again. My mom was piling me in and out of doctors, endos, internists offices all the time, to know avail. "You're daughter is fat, she needs to lose weight, push the plate away, etc, in which in return, my mother used negativity to try to control my diet, which only pushed me closer to food. I had always craved carbohydrate rich foods, would get weak and feel famished if I didn't have them and when I did try to lose weight, low cal, low fat only meant high carb, of course then did I realize the insulin connection-of course not. Mom who is a serious Pentacostal would refuse as a teen to put me on the pill to regulate all the symptoms. All of a sudden,I'm 18, pissing all the time, so thirsty I have white build up on my lips, headaches and a chronic yeast infection that would never go away. I take a 2 hour glucose test, and find out, I'm a "diabetic". Go on Glucophage, Amaryl, Zoco, the pill and then Provera, and every thing does what its supposed to but I hadn't changed my diet, as if I knew. I had other endos poking around, you are hairy, and then a vaginal us, and lo and behold "peal necklace" looking ovaries. They said you have Polycystic ovaries and that was the end of the conversation.
So for the past 8 years I have dealt with the diabetes, shaving off the 5 oclock shadow every day, the hump on my bags, the tags on my skin, etc. Only dealing with the removal of things, not the solution to things.
And I got married to the love of my life 3 years ago, 4 years together and all of a sudden I want to be a mother. Did they ever tell me it would cause infertility, no does my insurance care, no, and my financial situation is too dire for the US that are needed when taking clomid.
I took it upon myself, researched the stuff, read what you all talk about and demanded to see an RE,who is the best in my state. They say you'll have a child if you lose the weight and get your blood sugar under control, you need to go on a IR diet, which to me, is just a no or low carb one, so Im trying and I have lost 25lbs, but everything is still high. Cholesterol is high, blood sugar is high and on supplemental insulin, starting prometrium, baby aspirin per doctor and to stop the insulin , they also want me to start Avandamet and get off glucophage which puts me on the toilet all day. Any one have any advice. I am absolutely deperate, I don't want to go through this, I'm only 28 and I am deperate to give my husband and myself the child of our dreams and pissed off that its not happening and that it took so long to get some information about all this.
Hi Salty, I understand your frustrations. I had a doctor who when I was 18 told me the reason I wasn't having periods was because I was just "fat" and needed to lose weight. I didn't find out about PCOS and IR until I was 24. I know I still eat too much at times and not always the right things, but I'm a lot more aware than I used to be. Amazing what a dr. who actually cares enough to help find out what's wrong with you can do!
There are doctors out there who will help you without saying "lose weight and see us in a year". So you may want to do some more checking around. There's a place on this board where you can ask for doctor recommendations - you might find one that is a little more flexible and willing to work with you. I am overweight (working on it, but coming off *very* slowly) and my RE was fine with it and willing to help.
I don't have any great advice, other than to see what some of the other ladies on this board have done and don't settle for a doctor who won't work with you. I hope that things go well for you - welcome to this site!

I just keep getting amazed at all the stories that I'm hearing... I just was dx'd on 8/25. For the last 2 years I've been trying to lose weight, watching what i eat, I'm in the gym for an hour 4-5 days per week. And still gaining weight. My husband didn't understand it. But now with the dx things are actually beginning to make sense. I'm not the only one. It's wonderful. Thanks for your support girls.
You have just described my situation to a tee, and probably half the women on this board!! WELCOME to SOUL CYSTERS!! Just remember you are sooooooooooo not alone!

Thank you all kindly for your replies,it means something when you don't feel like the only one, doctors dont take pcos seriously, its an oh well thing, then when you want to have kids and are tired of the symptoms of the insulin resistance and want to reclaim your body back, is when I get the headache. And insurance, them b###### are not help. Your infertile is all they say and we'll get you to the point of diagnosis and I can even afford a prescription of Clomid even if insurance won't pay for it since it is a "fertility" drug, but the US that are required during monitoring is where they stop. I don't have the kind of resources to pay $500 or more a pop for an US when it will take like 3 of them to test the ovulation production. They should prescribe you the ovulation medication to fix the ovulation problem which is what PCOS truly is and if you get preg, then yeah. Get around the infertility word and combat the underlying medical condition. Nonovulation affects other hormone levels in the body, insulin is a hormone. It's not brain science. There's my rant for the day.
Me: 28
Hub: 35
Met. 850 3 times a day
Baby aspirin 1 time a day
To start Avandamet probably after next RE appt.
Started these nasty protein shakes, they help balance out the carb intake
Losing weight slowly but surely
Diet consists of high protein, high fiber, lower simple carbs, more calcium.

I have been taking clomid since January (except for the couple months I was pregnant) and I never had to have an US for the clomid. I love my dr. but it wasn't always so. This was not the first dr. I tried. I did have one that said lose 30lbs. and we will talk. FORGET IT! I WANT TO TALK NOW! In January I met the dr. of my dreams. He listened to me and worked with me. I went in because I was having no luck getting pregnant and my BBT charts were very weird. After some blood tests I had my answer. I was diagnosed with PCOS and IR in January of this year. "Fat" women get pregnant all the time! My problem wasn't being fat. My problem was it took me so long to find a good dr. I hope everything works out for you!

Thank you so much...this gives me hope...I have a top RE is the state who is highly recommended. I have only went to her once and I have another appointment on the 21st, to start on premara and avandia. Maybe I can get the clomid presription, but she is going to be testy about it because everything is outta control, working with the IR Diet to solve that, I just want the prescription, let me deal with the rest, that or buy it online but you never know who to trust in online pharmacies.
