Hey guys. I was officially diagnosed with PCOS today. After much trouble with trying to get my doc to listen to me, I switched doctors and within 3 weeks, including a visit, bloodwork and then another visit, he had an answer for me. He started me on Spironolactone 50mg two times a day. So I am off to do some research on it. In the meantime, can anyone tell me anything about it? Does it help with weight loss? Excess hair growth?
I there saspeabody! Welcome to Soulcysters. I understand how frustrating it can be to get doctors to listen! and I'm glad you found a doc to finally listen to you, and get a diagnosis.
I'm on... well should be on spironolactone. It's an anti-androgen. So it should help with excess hair, thinning hair, and acne. I was/should be on 200 mg/day. I absolutely LOVED it! as for weight loss... it may help a little bit, because it is a diuretic... but you may not see any huge weight loss effects.
Is that the only med you were put on?
Good Luck!

hi
welcome to sc Ive been on spiro years and years (about 6), at first it messed my periods up, but then i went back to my normal. My endo said that it takes 9-12 months to get to maximum result. and on spiro you cant have it if you are ttc - as it can damage male babies. hope this helps

Welcome to SC. I'm glad you found a Dr that doesn't have his or her head up their butt and knows about PCOS and is also willing to listen. I suffered a long time with that as well. Good luck with the medications!

Congrats on your diagnosis! I know I was relieved when I was diagnosed on April 2nd. My doc put me on 100mg of Spiro twice a day but I got a super bad migraine that lasted three days. He said I had something called a "hormonal" headache. Said it was normal because I had never been on birth control and my hormones were all out of wack. Told me to wait until I was on the bcp for two weeks and then start the spiro again. I go back to taking it on Monday. I'm hoping that my levels have somewhat changed so I don't get another massive migraine. At least some wonderful ladies in the PCOS chat recommended Excedrin for the pain and it seemed to work.

Congrats on finally getting a doc to listen and diagnose you. I'm not on spiro yet, my dr did'nt want me to try it yet, but please let us know how you do on it, and good luck.
