I guess I should start with “Hi,” and my name is Izzy. I’m one of those 19 year old college geeks, self-proclaimed hippie and a music fanatic (I’m always looking for recommendations). Right now I’m in between jobs and this mini-vacation couldn’t have come at a better time.
I think I have a pretty typical story. All my previous doctors had missed the symptoms, especially since it was covered up my lactose intolerance (weight issues and stomach problems, as well as mood swings), and I started puberty when I was 4 (we still don’t know for sure what caused that). Then, I started seeing a new doctor who was very concerned about my irregular and long menstrual cycles and excess hair on my abdomen and face. She said she thought it was either PCOS or Cushing’s, so she sent me to an endocrinologist.
After some tests, they found cysts on my ovaries and my blood work was totally clear for Cushing’s, but my LH to Testosterone ratio confirmed the PCOS to both physicians.
So Thursday after next I’m seeing my Endocrinologist again; I’m guessing for treatment options.
I’m both relieved and devastated by the diagnoses. Am I blowing it out of proportion? I’m feeling a bit lost and I’m not sure what to do next. I have some questions too, should I post them here?
Thanks to anyone who is reading this.
Izzy
(Sorry if I offended any gents by not greeting, not sure if there are any here)
Hey Izzy! Welcome to SC! You will find soooo much great information oh here! The girls are incredible, informed and really helpful!
You are totally not blowing it out of proportion! I was floored when I was diagnosed! There is so much to learn about PCOS and learning how to deal with all the nasty symptoms!
Post away hun! There are different sections on the board for different topics..i.e diet and excercise, medications, symptoms! Or you could post them here in the Newbie thread and I'm sure you will find a lot of answers!!
I'm relatively new to all this as well, but I would be glad to help where I can!
Good luck!

I did what I could to not cry all over the OBGYN who diagnosed me, I went in there saying in my head "not PCOS, not PCOS" after reading all about it.
Then he gets an Endo on the phone and they confirm it together, PCOS.
I could hardly contain my fears, I went home directly crying all the way and bawled to my DF.
I'm still upset over it, so I don't think you're blowing it out of proportion at all.
I'd suggest reading around about Birth Control, Metformin and Clomid around these forums..those are the most commonly prescribed things for PCOS so you know your options before seeing the Endo again.
Welcome and good luck!

Post away and welcome! I haven't taken and active role in managing my symptoms until this last year. i was dx in 1997, went on BCPs for 9 yrs and that was all I did. I am now trying to manage more of the symptoms. Though the whole diet thing is getting to me. For those of us that are poor, eating fresh fruits and veggies and lean meats is getting increasing more expensive. But, that's another rant.
You will find this site a great resource! And even though I still refuse to believe that this "syndrome" can never "go away". it's great to get other's stories and know that I'm not alone.
Antoher newbie here and just wanted to let you know that I feel the exact same! I think it is a totally normal response! Our worlds just changed - we now have a reason for all the physical stuff we have been experiencing but now we have to eat better, exercise, take a med that makes us feel lie crap, worry about diabetes and heart disease, tell the man you love that having children may be very hard - its a lot to take in all at once.
Hey! I too am 19 and in college. I was diagnosed about 6 months ago, so I know what you are going through. If you have any questions feel free to post. There is so much helpful information on here that I am sure you will find whatever you need, but don't ever be afraid to ask.
Welcome to SC!
