Points: 64.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 64.00 | Diagnosed with PCOS today Hi, I've been diagnosed with PCOS today, which in a way was a relief because I was convinced I had ovarian cancer.
For the last couple of months I've been having abdominal distension and tenderness along with gastric disturbances, painful periods, breast tenderness and fatigue. I've had unusual abdominal symptoms for years (bloating and pains) but this year my hormones seem to have gone haywire. I was convinced recently that I was pregnant but tests showed otherwise so I started to worry about cancer, especially because of the pain I was having. Sex used to also be painful sometimes - can that be a symptom?
Since my early 20s I had problems with excessively hairy legs and armpits(finally had them very successfully lasered over the last three years). I used to really hate summer when I had to reveal my legs and struggle with epiladies and waxing and other such torture devices. I thought it was genetic. PCOS expains it. I am not overweight but have always had probs with my tummy/abdomen area, so clothes shopping can be a nightmare.
My father had type II diabetes and I am now worried that genetics combined with PCOS means I am highly likely to get this too.
I would dearly love to have a child. Does PCOS mean I can't conceive? I have regular periods so the Dr said I should be ovulating but surely with PCOS you don't often release a mature egg?
I'm really pleased to have found this forum and to find I am not alone in this.

Welcome! I know you will find lots of helpful info on this site as I have. Do a search for your questions and you will get tons of advice and knowledge. I have had PCOS since I was a teen and recently found this fabulous site myself.
You can conceive with PCOS..I am living proof. I had an insulin resistance..not high blood sugars. I went on Metformin aka Glucophage and within a couple of months was pregnant after trying for 4+ years. After my daughter was born and I was done breastfeeding I went back on to control symptoms of the PCOS and was pregnant within a month with my son. Have lots of faith..it does happen.
Let me know if you need anything. I can try to help you with the knowledge I have or help you search if I don't know. |

While us cysters can have more trouble conceiving than other women, most of us are able to have kids, so take heart! Also, if you alter your lifestyle to prevent diabetes, by eating a healthy diet and exercising, you will also deal with some of your PCOS symptoms. We do have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes so we should be tested for it often (every 1-2 years I think) but we can also take preventative measures.
Good luck!

Charting your bbt every morning would be a good place to start to find out if you are O'ing or not. A website called fertility friend can help with that a lot. I haven't used it myself, but I know a lot of ladies do, and it seems really easy and helpful. I'm glad you found this website and I wish you all the best!

Points: 298.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 298.00 | Hi Ania! I have had several of the symtoms that you mentioned...I have been tested for every kind of GI disorder from celiac disease to gallbladder issues due to all of the distress I have had. They finally called it IBS (cause they didn't know what else to call it) but couldn't explain the fatigue, acne, hair growth, weight gain, pelvic pain (they thought that might be a hernia), high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, etc. What do you know - it is PCOS - and I have heard from several people who have GI issues with this disease. Maybe it has to due with all of the inflammation?? My inflammation markers are off the charts.. It took me about 8 months to get pregnant so I was really lucky. I never had to do any fertility treatment and have been pregnant 3 times (with a miscarriage - not unusual with this disease). I have been fortunate. |
