I know I posted this on another thread, but I thought I would try it here like this....
So, I had my doc appt yesterday and was diagnosed with PCOS. He also thinks I might have Endometriosis. He put me on 45mg Actos and Flutamide (can’t remember the dose). I really really really liked this doctor. He just sat and talked with me for an hour and a half. We went over my symptoms and he explained everything in such detail (he even drew me pictures). However, he diagnosed me as being insulin resistant without even taking my blood. Is this common? (He is a specialist with PCOS and is a
member of the PCOS Association.) After he explained what IR is and how it is affecting my hormones, I asked him if he needed to do any blood work. He simply stated that my symptoms and face told him everything he needed to know. Again, is this common? Will it hurt me if I am taking
Actos and am not really IR?
I started taking Actos yesterday and I feel a bit light headed and dizzy. I have sweat less than normal today (which is great), but besides that, I just feel out of it and absent minded. Is this my body just adjusting to the medication?
natalee, i think it is a common "first line defense" to start an anti-diabetic such as actos, the only way to know if you are truly IR is to do the glucose tolerance test, that being said, many docs go ahead and give the meds like actos because it is so common in PCOS why not go ahead and start it-worst it can do is cause some GI issues ex: nausea/diarrhea, it will not cause you to drop your blood sugar unless you are in fact are IR, not IR it makes you more sensitive to the insulin that your body makes=losing weight, not a miracle drug, works for some people, i tried it in the past for 3 months and did NADA for me-maybe i didnt take it long enough, but have thought of trying it again some time soon, then again im NO expert but i have researched alot and these are my conclusions, hope this helps!! (maybe take it at night to avoid the side effects if it really bothers you)

You've come to the right place. It sounds like you have a great doc to me. Specially to have someone who specializes in PCOS, thats pretty rare in just an OB.
I dont know about Actos either, but alot of times RE's can tell alot about just hearing about your symptoms.
GL!

I just want to add that when I was dx with IR, my dr went by physical symptons (face and necK) and not the glucose test I had taken. The glucose test was done by my Gynecologist and it was not a fasting test, so he said the results were not valid.
I went to my PCP last week for unrelated reasons but ended up chatting with her a bit about my dx. She was comfortable with it but I asked to look at my last blood work results (taken at annual Dec '07 after fasting). My glucose was a perfectly normal 94! Why am on IR meds if my glucose is normal? As I stated before, I have all of the other PCOS symptoms (acne, oily skin, cysts, PMS, night sweats, etc.)but is it possible to have all of this and not be IR? If so, then what? Do I stay on the Actos even if I am not truly IR?
