I was diagnosed with PCOS on Tuesday at a appt with a RE in Reno. I went on the suggestion of my laser hair removal tech (for my chin hair). Thank GOD she told me -- I always thought something was wrong, but all the docs just kept checking my thyroid (which is normal) and just assumed I was fat b/c I ate too much. Sigh....
Anyway, I am waiting for my period to start so I can get my full bloodwork done and start my meds. It should be any day now!
I am starting on Metformin (500mg 2x/day for the first 2 weeks, then 1000mg 2x/day), Yasmin, and Aladactone (50mg 2x/day). I also plan on going lo-carb at least until my system gets normalized. I think I am going with the SBD b/c it does let you each "good carbs" in phase 2.
My main question is this:
What is the main difference between PCOS and IR? My mom is a holistic nutritionist who is very interested in Syndrome X, and I have yet to tell her about my dx. How would I be sure to know that I don't have IR (except for the cysts on my ovaries I saw on u/s)??

Welcome to SC! Insulin resistance and PCOS often go hand in hand, but you can have one without the other. You don't have to have cysts to have PCOS. If you have the cysts but not the syndrome it's called PCO. Get checked for IR, diabetes, high cholesterol and be sure to check the birth control board, because some ladies think that bcps just mask the symptoms and don't help the actual problems. Here are a couple of links to check out:
I've been doing low bad-carbs since 2002 and it's made major improvments in my life. I do my own type of diet and am so sensitive to grains and caffeine, I cannot have either now. I tried goign back to both, but they just don't agree with my body. I eat lots of fruit, dairy, olive oil, some veggies and meat. I'm IR and I'm on 1500 of Met per day.

Welcome to SC! I have PCOS, but without the cysts. I also have IR. Be sure you have a blood test to check Insulin levels. If they are elevated, you are at higher risk for developing diabetes. The glucophage should help with the insulin levels as well as help you lose weight. In fact IR is one of the reasons we have trouble losing weight so don't get frustrated if it takes a little while for the weight to start coming off. I was just taken off my glucophage because I had a hypoglycemic reaction to it so unfortunately I am back at square one. Be sure to also check the glucophage boards to find out ways to combat the tummy upsets that the glucophage can cause the first couple of weeks. Again...welcome!
