Default Diagnosed a year ago with PCOS Not sure on what treatment to take

I found out a year ago that i had PCOS after dozens of bloodtests and a ultra sound but only after i found out what it REALLY meant. Its been hard.

I havent recieved any treatment yet since i moved town while i recieved a refference to a specialist.
Currently my new doctor is rubbish he doenst even know what sort of doctor i should be reffered to for medicine he wants me to dig up
old letters to find out what kind of a doctor i spoke to.

But will treatment be available on the NHS for the right drugs?
What is most reccomended, I think im getting worse my weight gain is going up again and im starting to get really lengthy periods and clotting on and off.

What medication is there available?
What is reccomend against weight gain and hair growth (on tummy, etc)?

thanks so much in advance if could help.

Red face

Hi Hun,

I was diagnosed 8 years ago, put on the pill and discharged from consultants care. Since then I got pregnant and now have my little miracle. When i was pregnant i had gestational diabetes and pre eclampsia and had to inject insulin, I was also put on a low GI diet which i was told I should already have been on for PCOS (I'd never been told this)!!! Because of this after having my DS I went back to Doctor to get refered again. This time I was told a lot more about PCOS, about insulin resistance and medications that would be useful. I saw a nurse practitioner and she was fantastic. When i told her about the difficulty i had losing weight she explained how people with PCOS usually cannot process carbs the same. I got cream called vanqua for facial hair but i dont really have much of that. I do on my tummy though! still haven't found anything for that although i am considering laser removal. For weight i would say to try a low GI diet and excercise. Nurse also told me the metformin can help with weight and regulating periods. I currently have 1 period a year if that and i'm hoping to start on met in October. If you have a specialist womens hospital in your area I would try to get referred there. I am under Liverpool Women's Hospital and they've been great. Hope you get something sorted.

Essie

Your course of treatment will be determined by your specific set of symptoms, and your health goals (ie For instance, if you're currently ttc, your treatment will be different from someone not ttc.)

There are several boards here that deal with specific symptoms. At the top of each forum, there are Sticky threads with comprehensive links to various treatment options.

Eva has already given you the link to the 'hair' forum.

I would also encourage you to see the stickies at the top of the D&E forum. Nutrition and physical activity are the foundation of any proper pcos treatment: http://www.soulcysters.net/forumdisplay.php?f=34
