Hi
I was finally diagnosed yesterday. I have to admit that I feel mixed emotions over the diagnosis. On one hand relief that there is an explaination for the weight gain, hairy lip and occasional mood swings. On the other hand it is a bit scarey to hear that you have a medical syndrome. Now the doctor wants more blood work done to confirm just how out of whack my hormones are and which ones are where. While I do have periods, they are not now nor have they ever been regular except when on bcp. I guess I will find out just how irregular my ovulation is since my husband and I are trying for #2. My symptoms really seemed to go through the roof after I stopped breastfeeding my son. Has anyone else noticed a certain event that seems to set off a chain reaction in symptoms?

Welcome to SC! Unfortunately anytime our hormones are affected it can set off a chain reaction. I did not develop PCOS symptoms until I went on BCP's. During pregnancy my body worked great and then after (I did not breastfeed) my symptoms started right back up.
It is scary to know we have a syndrome, but because we know we can work towards making ourselves better with the proper treatment. Check out all the other forums and you will find loads of helpful information.
Good luck, this is a great community and we are here to support you and answer your questions.
Heather

Hi, Lori. Welcome to the boards. It's never nice to be told you have a problem, but knowing what it is means you can start to learn how best to deal with it.
My PCOS symptoms started as soon as I started my periods, back when I was 11, but they definitely got much worse after my second son was born. I think a lot of this was to do with the fact that I had never had any treatment at all, having been told by several doctors that PCOS was nothing to worry about. I think if I had been better informed then, I'd have known that I really needed something to be done to cope with the enormous hormonal upheaval that took place. Hindsight's a great thing!
But now I have a supportive G.P. and a wonderful endo who are helping me through, and I wish the same for you.
Hi Lori! First off, WELCOME TO SOULCYSTERS!!! You've found a wonderful site filled with the most supportive and knowledgeable women on the planet!
I do understand how overwhelming a definitive diagnosis is. All to often, doctors just tell us, well you have PCOS...and nothing else. I am glad that your doctor is going to be doing more tests, and hopefully will be very proactive in your treatment.
I don't think there was any one event that triggered my PCOS. Mine began in puberty, and I've never had a normal period on my own without the help of BCP's or Prometrium.
Just wanted to wish you good luck with the tests and treatments! Hope to see you around the boards!

TAC placed 6/28/07 at University of Chicago.
Moving on to IVF after a year of infertility and 3 Femara cycles. Lupron started on 7/27.
My diagnosis of PCOS was confirmed last week. I'll be 40 next week, married just two years and my husband and I began an infertility investigation in May. I had investigative surgery last week that also revealed a fibroid nearly the size of my uterus and blocked fallopian tubes. The fibroid is operable, so more surgery, and the obgyn wants to start me on Metformin at the end of August (has anyone had any experience with this drug?)
I've started seeing a doctor of Chinese Medicine as well, and she has me on a special diet for my deficiencies (From the book The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis) as well as scheduled for monthly accupuncture.
I've been having a very hard time with depression and anger. Prior to starting this investigation, I felt like a healthy person. Now I feel broken, out of control and hopeless. It's starting to hurt my marriage. My husband and I had a very stressful year before we began trying to deal with the infertility, now things have only gotten worse. He's been supportive, but I've been hell on wheels to deal with.
I'm very grateful to have found this website; it's already been a huge source of information, especially on alternative treatments. The one the OB/GYN directed me to had absolutely no information on PCOS, only ovarian cysts (I let him know his site was useless and referred him to this one!)

I found out about 3 months ago I had pcos. I felt the same way, releaved to have an explanation as to why I have been gaining weight out of control and scared that there is a reason I'm not able to get pregnant.Hang in there.
1500 mg metformin
prenatal vitamins

hi, i'm nancy and i've just been diagnosed with pcos on july 20th. i was half devastated, half suspicious that i would have it! i'm 27 and i've had irregular periods almost all the time. luckily, i don't have cysts or enlarged ovaries, but knowing that there's still this "stone in my shoe" really hurts. but i'm so happy that i found this forum so i can share my experiences with all of you!
I was just diagnosed with PCOS on Tuesday and had mixed emotions myself. I was really upset and sad and then almost happy that I finally found a doctor who knew what was going on in my body. I have the same problem with hair on my face...what is that all about! Come to find out my testosterone levels were too high and I have always had really bad periods. They get so bad that I can't get out of bed sometimes. Anyway, hang in there and best of luck!
