Hi everyone! My name is Mandy and I am a mon to 3 boys (ages 4, 2, and 10 weeks). I was diagnosed with PCOS yesterday but my OBGYN didn't make an issue out of it. He just told me that I should go on the pill-but since I've been on 6-8 different ones that have all made me deathly ill, I told him-no thank you.
Now that I have googled PCOS, I'm starting to freak out! What am I in for? What should I do?
A little background info:
At 11 years old, I was told that my ovaries were covered in cysts (I had a 2 month long period). My OB at the time put me on the pill---I was sick for 6 months straight and decided to stop taking it. Throughout my high school years my period was actually normal (every 28 days). When I turned 21 I stopped having periods altogether. I was very thin and was also a runner so my OB (a different one) told me that I had amenoreha (sp?). I didn't have a perdiod for nearly 2 years but when I turned 23, I got pregnant with my first son.
I breastfed my son for 6 months and during that time I didn't have a period. When I stopped breastfeeding I had spotting everyday for the next 6 months but then I got pregnant with my 2nd son.
I breastfed my 2nd son for 4 months and went back to having normal periods (every 28 days for the next 6 months). After that I started spotting every day. My hair started falling out and I also developed a few skin tags. I went to my OB, who did blood work. According to my blood work, everything "looked" normal. Although I was spotting every day I managed to get pregnant with my 3rd son.
I am now 10 weeks post-partum and am back to having irregular periods. I have been having pain and swelling on my lower left side of my torso. My Ob had me go in for an u/s and said that my left ovary was covered with cysts and my right one had a few. I am still having hair loss and have developed a couple more skin tags (GROSS).....my dr. read the u/s report and told me, "you have PCOS"......and that was pretty much it.
What kind of b/w did your OB/GYN do? A u/s alone is by no means enough to dx PCOS! I was dx'ed the same way (u/s showed "cysts" on my ovaries) and went years without realizing my hormones were so screwed up.
Depending on what your hormone levels are, there are so many different options! Glucophage/Metformin is a popular treatment for IR, irregular cycles, and PCOS in general. Aldactone/Spironolactone, Flutamide, Vaniqa, etc. can be used to treat hirsutism and hair loss. Provera can be used to induce periods. There are also a number of alternative therapies you can try.
Definitely find a new doctor who's willing to listen to you and help you find the right treatment for your symptoms. Many women have luck with endocrinologists or reproductive endos but I was lucky enough to find a knowledgeable OB/GYN.
Hope that helps.
