Diagnosed yesterday and sad :( :( Please help Hello-
Until I was a freshman in college, I was very athletic. Although I gained weight easily, it was always in check. I gained 40lbs my freshman year and in the 9 years since have gained an additional 70lbs. I would tell my primary dr. that I ate healthy, I exercised, but she would basically tell me that that had to be a lie or I would have lost weight. She checked my TSH regularly but it was always normal. I was on the BC pill and my periods were regular.
This past summer, my husband and I decided to ttc in the spring of the following year (now) so I stopped the pill. Since then my periods were 50-60+ days apart. I went to my ob/gyn and explained my concern, but he said it was just stress. I kept on him though and he finally referred me to a specialist...
My first visit was yesterday. They were extremely thorough. When they did an ultrasound of my ovaries, there it was...the dreaded pearl necklace. Now, instead of my husband and I enjoying TTC, we have lots of paperwork and prices to go through for fertility treatments. It's a lot to take in and our insurance only covers diagnostic testing and IUI and nothing else.
Here is what I would really like some advice with:
-My Dr. called today and said my progesterone was elevated so that I must have ovulated (I had a feeling I did on April 4th) and that I should get my period soon, then she is doing a Clomid Challenege Test (luckily my ins. covers this). Well, the last time I got my period was February 15th!! How is it that I ovulated with such a long cycle (60 days and counting)...is this normal with PCOS...is this a "good" sign that maybe my PCOS isn't so bad? I don't want to get any false hopes.
-After these diagnostic tests are complete, should my husband and I just TTC on our own...we haven't even begun yet and now with the diagnosis of PCOS< the Dr.s just want to do fertility treatments. Can I get pregnant on my own? Has anyone else here? I mean, I am only 27 years old and I feel like maybe we should TTC on our own without the help of fertility drugs, because we couldn't afford them right now anyway...
-Also, when you are on Clomid because you are ttc (not doing the CCT), do you just pay for the meds or do most RE also charge for "Clomid Treatment cycles". My RE does and it is over $1000 so this makes us very sad because we know we can't afford it. the medicine we can afford, but not the $1000 "treatments".
-And lastly, sorry this is so long but I am super new to all of this, to complicate matters further, my mother (she died when I was ten) and my sister have an Incompetent Cervix..basically, they both had more than 5 miscarriages at 3-6 mos because of this before it was diagnosed. My Dr.s are aware of the possible genetic link, but does anyone here know if PCOS will also mean I have a higher risk of IC?
Thanks for all of your help, I was happy to find this site and I so look forward to hearing from you!
