My name is Kim and I received my diagnosis of PCOS 4 days ago. I was kind of expecting it and would have been disappointed if the lab results would have been inconclusive. I already knew a little bit about PCOS but now that I have actually been diagnosed there are so many thoughts running through my head. My husband and I are newlyweds and were planning on waiting about 6 months before TTC. Now I don't know if we should start right away. When I talked to the NP on the phone she said the results indicated that I did have PCOS and that she wanted me to have an ultrasound but at the time (I was at work) I didn't think to ask about meds or what lab results actually were. Now I'm stressing over everything. I'm very much a plan everything kind of person and the not knowing what is going to happen with my fertility and health is scary. I'm sorry this message is so scattered. I couldn't get in for the ultrasound for another week. Has everyone else had one done? Is it to confirm the diagnosis? On the phone the NP said something about fertility but I'm not sure what. And what did you do about telling your family? My husband and I haven't told anyone. I think I want to wait until I know what the game plan is before I share the diagnosis. Anyway, I'm so glad I found a place where women know what I'm going through and I can learn from all of you as I begin this journey.
Hello and welcome to SC. The ultrasound is a very typical thing to have done it is to check to see if you have cystic ovaries, most women with pcos will have a ring of cysts on the bottom of thier ovary I think they call it the ring of pearls or something crazy like that lol I told my family right away but most of them already knew that I strongly suspected something was wrong and that DH and I were going to start TTC. As far as when you should start ttc that is up to you, I personally think you should speak to your Dr. about meds and see what your ultrasound looks like before making any decision, Do you know if you ovulate on your own???? That will definately be something your doc will need to find out!!! I hth I am sure there are more people on here that are more experienced than me I am no expert GL to you and keep us cysters updated!!!!
I am newly diagnosed as well. My doc did an ultrasound too to solidify what the test results were telling him. They didn't get a good look at my ovaries, but he said he could go ahead with the diagnosis. He then put me on Metformin which I guess is kind of the first medication most docs try. I am also working with my PCP to lose weight and get my cholesterol down. My husband and I are TTC as well; however, I am not ovulating on my own which is complicating things.
Since your original plan was to wait for 6 months to get PG, you are probably not wanting to have children right away. You might be thinking that it may take 6 months to successfully get PG anyway, so you might as well start right away.
I would suggest that you take this 6 months to concentrate on getting your body ready to TTC, so when you guys are ready to bring a baby into your family, you will be able to get PG when you were actually planning to .
Due to some medial problems, and Tx that was not compatible with pregnancy, I was not able to TTC for the last year. I took that opportunity to start PCOS Tx (I use alternative PCOS Tx) and have been getting my body healthy through a better diet, and nutritional supplements. We have been using protection to prevent PG.
During this last year, I was able to get my cycle to be regular 27-29 day cycles again, I was able to lose some weight, and I think that I am ovulating on my own, since I have felt the symptoms around CD14. So now that I am finally ready to start TTC, I think (I hope) that I will be able to get PG soon. I am in the 2ww right now; will know if all the preperations have paid off in 2 weeks.
I wish you great success with PCOS Tx, and TTC whenever you decide to start.
BTW, cool that you are an RN too.

Hi Kim! Your situation sounds a lot like mine! I am also a newly wed and we waited awhile to TTC and I'm just now starting to TTC.
You'll get the ultrasound to see if you actually have cysts on your ovaries. You may or may not. I don't, but I still have a form of PCOS. You can have a hormonal imbalance, no cysts, but still be considered PCOS.
My advice, since you were planning to wait 6 months to TTC, would be to find out exactly where your imbalance lies, treat it, use Birth Control of some sort, then hopefully your body will be ready when it's time to get pregnant. Now this all depends on what kind of imbalance you have. Can you request the results of your blood work? If you call your dr's office, they should be able to fax or email you the results. From there, and when your doctor determines what the course of action will be, you can decide on birth control. Personally, (especially if you end up with a big hormonal imbalance) I'd recommend to stay off of the pill and be diligent in using condoms. The pill can really throw off your hormones and then when you stop the pill it can really mess things up.
Let us know what your blood work looked like and we can give you more advice on what your doctor might have you do or what you should ask him about.
Don't fret, you'll be ok and you are taking action early which is the best thing you can do!!

Hello and welcome to SC! It's nice to see you here. I read your post and I may have a somewhat controversial opinion but I don't really think that 6 mo. is going to matter much and if you still want to wait. I would wait. I do understand however that you now feel a sense of urgency that you totally didn't have before. But there is no 100% guarentee that you will have any infertility issues. You didn't really say what your symptoms were so I don't really know if you ovulate regular or not. But, there are lot's of things that you can do to increase your chances of concieving like improving your diet (any amount if weight loss if you are overweight will help) and taking care of any insulin resistance. In fact if insulin resistance is an issue for you just being on metformin is enough for some women to come up with a bfp! Infertility treatments are best handled by a RE and not really a OB/GYN. (So keep that in mind and get in with one if you can)That person would be best to advise you guys if waiting 6 mo. would be a disservice to you both. (Not likely unless you have already been trying for longer than 1 year or are over the age of 35) Not sure if this helps you relax or not but, I do hope so.

Hi! I am new too. I actually had an ultrasound first and the tests afterward. They couldn't tell that I had PCOS was the ultrasound - everything looked fine. The blood tests were what diagnosed me. I was the same as you - I never asked for my results or anything! I just was like 'Cool, what do I need to do?". My doctor then put me on Yasmin for the short term (I was put on BCP in March 06) until this summer when me and DH are going to TTC. She said she is confident that the BCP will help, but we are going to do more blood tests come this summer.
Telling the family was very easy - its so common. I told my mom right away and she suprised me by saying she too has PCOS and was diagnosed almost 25 years ago when they didn't know alot about it! She had 3 kids naturally, so that gives me hope!
