Default Dianette worries

I was on Dianette for 2 1/2 years 3 years ago treat pcos symptoms but never really noticed any improvements in my hirsutism (by that stage my skin problems had already been solved by roacitain). I eventually came off it and over the course of the last few years managed to loose a lot of weight and get semi-regular periods back (which was great but i still have excess body and facial hair). On coming off it I also realised that it had been supressing my libido (never noticed while I was on it since I was so young when I went on it) consequently I finally got my first boyfriend. As a result I needed contraception and lo and behold my doctor recommended dianette. I caustiously went back on it thinking the side effects may not occur this time around since I lost weight and sorted my hormones out a bit but I've been on it for two months now and have been getting breast pain and have been extreamly tearful, anxious, generally emotional and often depressed. I'm pretty scared about it because of all the bad press as well and my first instincts are to come striaght off it but I've read that such symptoms often go away when your body gets used to it after a few months.

So just wanting opinions really, have people experienced these symptoms? Did they go away when your body settled into the medication? What does everyone know about the bad press that's flying around at the min?

I'd really appreciate any opinions, thank you!

Hello,

Personally I have never got on with Dianette. It has always made me thoroughly depressed and increased my appetite ridiculously, plus didn't really do anything for my acne or period pain. I am in 2 minds as to what to advise you to do. I think it may be worth giving it another month or so to see if these side-effects settle down as they should. However, I think most doctors are not so keen on Dianette due to it being more risky with DVT etc. So, Yasmin is the alternative, and I must say I feel far better on Yasmin.

Perhaps it would be worth asking for a pill with less oestrogen since you are getting those particular side effects.

xx

Hi steph...sorry to hear you have had such difficulties with Dianette in the past. I was taking it on and off for about 5 years I'd say and didn't have any real problems. It definitely helped clear any acne, regulated my periods of course and generally worked well. However, I came off it a few months ago and have been doing well since. Now I am going back on BCPs but this time my doctor has prescribed Yasminelle (lower dosage than Yasmin) and also supposed to have an antu-androgen effect but it's very mild in general. I'm from Ireland so this is a European BCP. I am not sure what other brand name it goes under. I am waiting on AF now and will start it once I get it. I'm hoping it too will be helpful and I guess I am just glad to know that it's lower in oestrogen than Dianette (and also a very new and updated BCP)

I think you should go back to your dr and check for some other options...the Yasmin brand and other forms seem to work well for PCOS ladies. I hope all goes well for you, take care and best of luck!
