A Diuretic is a medication that increases your output of urine. As terrible as that sounds to some people it has alot of benefits. It helps to reduce body fluid build up in other parts of your body, such as swelling, esp in your legs, fluid collection around your lungs which may help you breath better. A common diuretic is Lasix, which as the name implies lasts about six hours in your system. When you first start on this medicine take it when you're sticking around the house some, so that you can make it to the bathroom in time incase it sneaks up on you.

A natural way to get the same affect as a diuretic medication is to drink lots and I mean LOTS of water through out the day.
If you drink 2L - 3L (hard to do at first, so work your way up there) you will get the same effect as a diuretic med, without having to take the med. Of course, it only works as long as you keep doing it.

i'm taking a diuretic called HCTZ for my high blood pressure. they make you pee alot so i take it first thing in the morning, at 6a when i get up with baby. but it's not bad...just maybe 2-3 times more a day than i normally do.

i can't remember exactly, but the diuretic makes you pee to get rid of excess sodium that your body holds on to (?) that can cause edema and other issues.
