I started taking Metformin on monday, 1500MG a day..3x a day with breakfast lunch and dinner. I have had severe diarrhea since tuesday. So bad I had to call in sick to work because when the urge hits, I have to go immediately, and working as a receptionist I can't always go to the bathroom if I am dealing with a client. It seems to hit about 20 mins after I eat. It's to the point where I almost didn't make it to the bathroom yesterday. Any suggestions on what I should do to help this? I took some pepto and it is helping a little bit. I am thinking about maybe taking 2 for the next few weeks instead of 3 just to build up to the 1500mg dose. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Wow I'm surprised they started you off that high. My doc has me starting at 500, 1000, then to 1500 spread out over 6 weeks. I started with 1000mg Monday and I've had similar symptoms as you, vomiting and diarrhea, more vomiting though.

Yikes, Starting that high is normally unheard of. I agree with the gradual dose increase. It doesn't stop the diarrhea but it helps!

Wow! I started at 500 and then a week later went to 1000....a week after that I still couldn't get up to 1500 so I backed down to 1000. It took me a long tme to get up to 2000 and once I did I just toughed it out with vomiting and diarea for about a week or two. Lord it's a hard med to take and still have a life outside the house where the bathroom is SOOOO close!!!!!

I called my Dr. yesterday and they told me I should start at 500, then work my way up, too badthey didn't tell me in the first place! I ended up in the emergency room last night because I was so dehydrated! I don't know if I am going to take this anymore, it doesn't seem worth it for all this hassle!
