Default Did anyone find Metformin helped with acne?

Has anyone found that Metformin helped with acne at all? I am now off BCP and on Metformin and I've noticed breakouts. I am alittle confused because I thought Metformin would help with the hormonal imbalance.

What has been everyone's experience with Metformin in helping acne?

LizaA,

I've been taking metformin (1,000mg/day for now) for about two weeks and it's cleared up my skin a lot! I mentioned in another thread here that I had "pimples that won't heal"...well, since met, all of the pimples have healed and I haven't gotten any new breakouts (before, I would get breakouts all the time!). I still have some acne scarring but they are fading, too.

I read that metformin is supposed to help with acne along with the IR, but I didn't expect it to work for me this fast!

Hi Siam, glad to hear that Mets working for you. Can I ask if you're taking any other medication aside from Met? Just hoping that Met will bring on my AF and clear up my skin. The skin has actually gotten worse - this is a sign for me that my hormones are not under control. Still waiting for things to improve.

I've been taking 500 mgs of Met for a few months and it has seemed to help my acne. I still get pimples but they are smaller, superficial and less frequent. I used to get deeper rooted zits.

A few years ago I read a book called The Acne Cure. It really helped me at the time and you might want to take a look at it. I liked it way better than Proactive.

Liza, to answer your question, I'm also taking Armour thyroid (30mg) and Wellbutrin (300mg) along with the Met. More than enough pharmaceutical drugs for me.

As for the Met, sometimes it takes a while for your body to regulate itself on it. In my case, the Met improved my skin very quickly but I haven't been losing much weight on it yet (unlike most of the women here taking it). It sounds like for you, the acne improvement might take a little while longer than some of the other good effects you're getting from it right now. Good luck to you....I do hope you'll soon see your skin clear up like it should!

This is the second time I've been on Met. The first time was pre-pregnancy and I was on 500 mg a day, this time I'm up to 1,000 mg/day. I'm doing the same thing again that I did last time, in breaking out pretty badly to start with, then it settles down and I have only a cyst (cystic acne) every once in a while, once the dosage of met has settled and I'm maintaining well.

I'm on my 4th month of Met...now upped to 2000mg/day. I think that it's finally helping my acne. I still get new small acne almost every few days, but it goes away faster and are rarely as bad/big/cystic.

(I had been doing some soy protein shakes last year that really messed me up with jawline cystic acne that wouldn't go away for months.)

A facial care line that I think is also helping a lot is Collective Wellbeing. Their "change for a night" stuff is amazing. I like that they're less chemically-dependent and don't use benzoyl peroxide (like Proactiv) which totally dried my skin out and didn't help anyway.

Yes, the combination of Metformin, Yasmin, and Aldactone (spironolactane) helped tremendously with the acne. I am still one hairy chick, though.

It seems it might be, I'm on my second week at 1000mg daily, but I'm also on spiro.

Even though my ance would have been considered mild, met has basically cleared it all up.
