I have not been diagnosed yet, but with a testosterone level of 94.6 and a referral to an endocrinologist, I see a PCOS diagnosis in my future. My symptoms are strange though. Has anyone experienced these: weight problems, slow hair growth, pubic and head hair loss as well as eyebrow loss, vaginal dryness and vaginal infections (resistant yeast and bacterial vaginosis), persistent fatigue and exercise intolerance. I've had my thyroid checked five or six times and each time it keeps coming back in the .3 range. Once it was .4 and another time it was .6. This is better than normal. So, its not that. The only unwanted hair growth I have at the moment is a little under my belly button, two tiny, tiny dark chin hairs (virtually invisible) and 2 very light "toe whiskers" on each toe. I do have acne. I've had terrible acne my entire life. But, through my year and a half of being so ill and not having a diagnosis, this is the only thing that has shown up in my lab work (my testosterone level, that is). The doctor is going to have my adrenal glands checked too just to be sure its not some type of tumor that's causing my glands to be overactive. But from what I've read, my levels aren't high enough to indicate an adrenal tumor. ANYWAY! lol. Did/does anyone else feel this ill with PCOS???
I also wanted to add that, while my tests for autoimmune disorders came back negative, there is a very good chance I may have crohn's disease (it runs in my family big time). Also another reason I believe I might have something autoimmune is because my fatigue is a lot better if I take anti-inflammatory meds like advil or tylenol. Is autoimmune disease (besides hashimoto's) common with PCOS?
The symptoms you are experiencing are normal! Weight gain is very common because of insulin resistance. Hair loss is experienced by a lot of cysters, though I don't have that. Acne, vaginal infections, unwanted hair growth, all common. I hope you get a diagnosis and help soon!
I have all those as well, plus a few more. You may have IBS instead of Crohn's but you really should get tested to be sure. I have heard that Cronh's is very dangerous to leave untreated.
Well, I know that the weight problems and the head hair loss is normal. But even my doctor is stumped by the loss of my eyebrows and pubic hair and she has PCOS herself! lol. Also, my body hair used to grow super fast and actually used to be thicker. But I've noticed that ever since I got sick its thinned a little and it grows slower. I've always thought that PCOSers grew hair pretty fast. And the two tiny chin hairs I have, I maybe have to pluck those once a month. Less actually. (I don't want to jinx myself here. :-\) I'm actually not overweight right now, thanks to the no carb diet I started before I found out all of this. Before I was 155. Now when I weigh myself in the morning with no clothes on and an empty stomach, I'm 134. I started eating carbs a couple of weeks ago and I haven't really gained much weight because of it. I'd still like to exercise, but I can't because it makes my symptoms 10 times worse.
And Somamoons, now that you said that about the adrenal gland storming that probably explains why I feel so bad some days.
I was also wondering if you guys ever got the vaginal dryness and infections in control. I have had one constant bacterial vaginosis and yeast infection for the past couple of months and I'm afraid I'll never be able to have sex again. I'm only 21. I'm too young to give it up now.
