Question Did anyone's doc tell them this?

Hi everyone!!
I am a little upset and I thought that I was pose this question here to get everyones opinions--A long time ago when no one knew I had PCOS, my doc gave me provera to start a period. After taking it for 3 or 4 days, i had a heavy period and they assumed everything was fine and put me on BCP. Fastforward 10 years, I havent got my period in about 3 years, and i have stopped the BC awile ago. Now, since my and my hubby are trying to get pregnant, I went back to the doc in august of '06 and she gave my provera to start my period.....i had a day of spotting, if you could even call it that--it was so light that if i didnt have a pad on and didnt stare at it for 5 min, i wouldnt have noticed the very faint streak of brownish fluid. So I called my doc and she said that it counted as a period, which i just dont understand. So she put my on metformin, 3 months went by and still no period, the doc put me on another round of provera (10mg for 10 days) and had no period. So I waited 11 days after my last pill and called the doc again.....she put me on yet another dose of provera, this time 10 mg for 20 days, and she said that if i dont get my period this time, then basically she cant help me and i need to go see and endocrinlogist. has anyones elses doc said this?! did provera not work for anyone else!? Also, in the beginning, she told me that if i dont get my period on provera, that means i probably cant have children--does anyone know if this is true? I am so frustrated and scared now b/c i have been eating right, working out, taking my meds, and i still dont have a period!! I knew it was going to be hard, and that there would be a chance that i couldnt have children, but now that that chance is becoming more and more real i dont even know how to begin to grasp it...help!

Oh my gosh! This doc does not sound like anyone I would like to work with. Please find a new doctor immediately.

My philosophy is never say never with regards to having a child. My DH & I are having issues with fertility, as well. Soon after I went off BC, I, too, did not get my cycle right away (3 mos. to be exact) & was put on Provera. I got my cycle for 1 day & my old ob/gyn said that it counted as a cycle. Fast forward to today & I have a new ob/gyn (due to relocation) & am now taking Metformin ER 750 mg. 2/day. I am still not regular but do seem to get my cycle at least every other month or every 2 mos. Much better than nothing. Our next step may be Clomid but we are waiting on my husband's test results from the urologist.

Just wanted to let you both know that you are not alone. Also, that there are a lot of bad doctors out there, sometimes more bad than good. But, once you find a good doctor it is well worth the struggle/search. Best of luck & please let me know if you ever need to talk or there is any more information I can provide you with.

Take Care.

Hi
The same thing happened to me and I have an 9 month old littl eboy now. I came off the pill to TTC and had no AF for 10months was given provera and nothing happened..not even a drop. I over excersised and the doctor told me to go away do less excercise and come back in 3 months and they would try again...I was really upset but 3 months later after still no period (over a year now) and they gave me a U/S and I was 8 weeks pregnant!! God knows how but it happened. So your docter is wrong, you should see someone else.

I think it means something if provera fails to induce a period, but I forget just what. And it sounds like it has worked for you in the past, so I don't know...

You say you went 3 years without a period??? Was this on or off BCP? If you were not having cycles on BCP, someone should have looked into that for/with you. It is normal(ish) to miss the occasional cycle on BCP but it shouldn't be that way all the time. Light cycles, maybe, but not NO cycles.

What kind of doctor are you seeing? What kind of tests have you had done? It does not sound to me like PCOS/infertility is her area of expertise. You could have anatomical or hormonal issues going on that she hasn't a clue about; it sounds like she is just giving you provera and hoping that you bleed??

I would take the suggestion of seeing an endocrinologist to heart - ideally a reproductive endocrinologist since you want to get pregnant now. It sounds like you need a thorough going-over to figure what's going on.

I totally agree, an RE would be your best bet.

It's possible that you don't have enough estrogen to build a lining, so provera won't help with that. If there's no lining, there's no shedding of it, so no bleeding. An RE should be able to rectify that.

Good luck!!
